Im going to try and screw around with the magic system today sometime, i'm thinking like the system I used in one of my games would fit the world...maybe.
Basically its: If you experiment with magic and are not super lucky, you die horribly...repeatedly.

Following the last 100 years since we last saw our esteemed SCTG - Things didn't stay as well as they had been going.

(Using a bit of Terenos' epilogue for my previous character)

After several years of fighting with the Pirate Merchant Tearakudo A'Valti a treaty was finally signed between them. The treaty wasn't enough to save the Trade Guild though. Other kingdoms, Suul included, started to raid the seas or at a minimum defend their cargo. Eventually the Guild had to liquidate assets to pull back their range of influence. The SCTG can barely claim dominance over the seas within 4 weeks travel of Vasir. The only real Guild Hall remaining is the Head Office in Vasir yet a mere fraction of it's former glory.
