To make it simpe to you guys, there is no clear-cut separation between the medieval and reneissance. it was all a blur and evolution rather than radical change. Think Empire from Warhammer Fantasy.
Reneissance would be Empire: you got your knights and wizards, but you also got the beginings of proper science, gunpowder, more loose social structure (for its time) and so on. you also got them funky clothes and the climate overall feels niecly put together and balanced.

Obviously warhammer is an exaggaration and its a fantasy , but so is our world, and for the purpose of demonstration thats how it looks. If you are not familiar with Warghammer then its not my fault.

That's true, but people always seem to believe that history is locked into periods of time all with different "things" so just to make things simpler, I just say go for Renaissance since it's easier to say than "medieval period with paper, ocean-going ships, increased learning, and basic gunpowder weaponry."

You DON'T have to were renaissance clothing. It's not like everything suddenly shifted to renaissance clothing; it took centuries for it to spread from Italy to Scotland in real life. For all we know Swastamik and Elbreth may still be unaffected.

I played empire!

and by played I mean I bought the starter box and put them together, but never actually played a game of warhammer.

The clothes are the best part! Puffy fabrics, gasp! Bright colours, oh my! Capes, boots, gloves, SILLY HATS!
Good gods man, how can you possibly resist the urge to dress like that? What, you prefer your dirt-encrusted fur cloak and leather shirt? Ugh, no thank you.

You'd want a more Dune-y setting for this game, methinks. The 40K mindset does not lend itself well to politics; its more of a 'might makes right' sort of universe.
