Nothing, it's a skill check which can have its difficulty reduced by money.

Plus land can be taken a lot easier from you than businesses, that and you also have to get more land to make a bigger profit, which will get the attention of nations. Not always a good thing...

Strictly speaking, you can.  They have a treasury to infiltrate, after all.  It's just that they have power comparable to the Hansa or the East India Company at their height.  Trying to embezzle the Guild is not for the faint hearted.

Technically speaking, businesses can be taken from you by an invading army that captures the town those businesses are located in and doesn't respect ownership rights.  Businesses aren't immune from seizure in war, it's just that most invading armies would rather tax you than try to take it over.

Speaking of which, rule clarification.  You can only operate one business.  You can operate as many branches of that business as you want, but you're essentially confined to either the Industrial, Commercial or Service sector once you start (short of wiping out your business and changing sector - I'd let new businesses do a sector change for free if they made a mistake, but established ones would have costs associated).  This is just to prevent one player owning a megacorporation that can do everything.

It should take at least three players for that.

Yes, though admittedly they'd only get 3 land regiments per year unless a fourth person were to come in and own land (or they used mercenaries - a dangerous option).  On the other hand, the Service businessman could use up his income to produce Sailor specialists and they could have a dangerously large fleet.

Which is, in fact, exactly what the Guild of Storm Coast Shipwrights does for the SCTG.

Well, if they each pitch in 4 ducats then that would be enough for a guild founding. Then you do whatever you want/need with it and have a steady income to support whatever operations the three may plan. I seriously think that Elbreth is in a dire need of something like that, otherwise SCTG will devour the entire economy. Problem is that barely any noble in that country has any idea about economy, or at least displayed any fiscal sensibility, save for Erik.

See, I'm somewhat concerned about the SCTG. I have this feeling they're trying to muscle in on our territory. Admittedly with promises of wealth and power...But I dont trust them.

Ardas, The SCTG is unable to do any such thing..Taking things over completely. Hah! They are -attempting- to move in. Their entire plan revolves around us granting them lucrative concessions that are entirely likely to damage us in the long run. This is what I like to call the initial shaft, position. They're seeing whether or not we're willing to play ball. We -should- straight up say no. But thats really up to the ruling powers in whatever places they're trying to get footholds in. Hence not my concern!

 But I'd go on record as saying we shouldnt trust them. At all.
