Shoot raises a good point about that, though technically that means Laythe already has a +1 skill bonus to personal fighting...

I did not mean that you should have +1s here and there for everything your character is good in... I think all characters could have a trait to show what they are really good in (Nikephoros is a great general, Kathos knows is a natural leader, etc.), and if they want more than one they can just work for it (there's a system in place for that).

So this is plainly not an issue. We already have bonuses ( niko has +1 tactics and +2 strength, both presumably apply in battle), and things like charisma or high intelligence will affect things like talking to NPCs or research rolls.
But making up a thing for every single action is tad silly. Those modifiers are only 1 or 2 per character and they reflect your presonal talent. so current system should stay unchanged.

Maybe there should be a hard cap set of no more than +3 or +4 total per character, with a maximum of +2 or 3 in anything? Because I agree with the idea that if, for example, you're a legendary fist fighter, you shouldn't be losing to random punks on the street, but on the other hand you shouldn't also be a master artist, inventor, tactician, diplomat, sailor, tailor, etc. This would also have the benefit of making those extra ranks take a lot more effort to reach, so you have reason to stick with training more often and whatnot.

One rather imagines that over the years a man will ask himself this question, and come up with an answer which satisfies him so much he believes in it; they won't just say "Huh, never thought about it before, but now you mention it, I get a sort of tingly feeling when following your orders". I don't think William could find out about his powers unless he is specifically told by someone who already knows, or lives to a great age and sort of notices it over long periods of time (decades- Kain, for example, might notice that humans who previously hated him slowly become loyal to him for no apparent reason over the course of decades)

Skills work fine, right? Please don't say we need to rework the skill system D:
Don't fix what ain't broke, and if possible, don't fix what only has a few cracks in.

My suggestion would hardly need to rework the entire system... nobody has more than +2 total so far (I think; somebody might have a +3 total) unless Arctic Fox has a ton of skills, so putting a cap on it now would create no visible difference.

Lets also keep in mind that we're all player characters, and as such have the potential of a level of badassery that is not within the capability of normal characters. So I dont see a reason why we should cap skills.
I mean sure, +1 can be trained, +2 and further need questing to do it. With longer and longer quest chains, we wont even see a +4.

For the most part we're all just picking +1 bonuses we think will be useful/say something about our characters.
