Spaghetti: A pure fighter character may be a tad one-dimensional. Mercenaries/guards tend to have little in the way of independence; a realistic portrayal of your actions would be 'follow my lord around, protect from hypothetical dangers'.
You may want to change your character's ambitions to something more... ambitious.

I havent fully caught up, but i've gotten as far as something about dirt cheap OP units - which i'm gonna have to veto unless someone can give a DAMN good reason...and a pair of 5s for half-cost units is not one. Especially not at heavy 3, a cost of a LOT of ducats and training time

Well, it could be the base regiments and the first heavy upgrade being discounted for the units (The 4 Ducats is a total, I'm just assuming that it's being split over the two units being trained.)
