You should be aware that part of my plan is making Lord Cain afraid of how much military might you possess and playing off of the fear he might attack Shola. You telling him you're not going to kinda makes my forces a redundant hire.

I don't think Terenos is so foolish. He managed to take unaware one city, defended only by three regiments - attacking Ligoria right now would be suicidal - we're in winter - and attacking it in spring, after we recruited our men, would be just as bad.

Yeah, only he'd have orders only to speak his business to Lord Cain, and interfering means you'd be killing an innocent person (As you'd have no proof hes carrying anything in that letter that might screw you over).
Not to mention said messenger will likely just lie to get into Shola then go about his business all secretively. Cause yknow, attacked/killed/so on? Yeah.

You dont know its a messenger. He could be traveling with 'refugees' from Mileth. Theres really not a lot you can do except possibly step up patrols and shake down every single person who comes from that direction.. Thats -sure- to make you popular with Lord Cain.

Point is, you don't know theres a message, and there are a dozen valid reasons why anyone would be traveling away from a city occupied by a hostile foreign power, alone or not.

Either accost everyone, Or run the risk that someone you don't accost will be my messenger. Stepping up your guard because you suspect a messenger is fine. Grilling everyone to be sure is perfectly acceptable IC.

Outright attempting to stop my messenger(because you know there is one, OOC), is kind of an annoyance.
Now, I am pretty much doing what i'm doing to be an antagonist and further some storyline/plot. And as such I -could- send my orders in in secret. But thats less fun for observers.

Who says I'm not stopping everyone? Just because I'm not writing out every minute of every hour of winter doesn't mean he's not doing that. Besides, Tristan doesn't suspect him of being a messenger; he suspects him of being an enemy scout. I just put messenger in the action part of the post so the person who rolls it knows for sure I meant the guy you sent and not someone entirely random. He can still talk his way out of it, but to prevent too much IC/OOC bleed I'm going to leave his ability to convince Tristan he should pass up to the dice.

Huh..Well, I'm not sure but I think that means, 'stand around and get paid for doing not much of anything'


Suddenly I'm sending a message, that will directly complicate your ability to get paid by standing around and doing nothing, and you're retconning it to be 'oh we're stopping everyone, and your guy too.'

So its either, you've been hassling everyone coming in already, in which case I'd like there to be a check to see if you've annoyed the citizenry enough that Cain will end your contract anyways, Or you're blatantly attempting to act on OOC information by stopping MY messenger. Pick one, if you'd be so kind.

Garrison = defend the town. Defend the town = do patrols, man the gates (the guards would stop your messenger there anyway to 'state his business;' the only difference in this scenario is that Tristan is asking that question slightly before you reach the guards, and if you can convince him to let you through you can just skip the gate entirely since he'll let them know it's OK to pass. If you want to be an absolute stickler about it though I can just rewrite the post so he's at the gate instead, in which case again you'll be stopped...), stand watch, etc. And no, no retconning at all. I'm still in Shola's immediate environs, which is what I meant in the first place. "Until either Spring rolls around" - meaning for the duration of Winter I'm staying in Shola - "or a force attacks Shola" - meaning I'll have to act immediately on battle, which will interrupt my standing order of "garrison the town." Once Spring is here I'll either renew my contract with Lord Cain or move on.

Can we safely assume there have been other travelers from Mileth to Shola since my occupation? : Yes.
Can we safely assume that they were up to absolutely nothing in the way of subterfuge? : Yes

Can we safely assume that they were grilled anyways, coming from a recently occupied city and yknow, concerns about spying? Again yes.
Can we safely assume nothing came of these previous interrogations? Yes.

As such the regular guard would likely ignore anyone coming from Mileth. You however, will not.

Can we safely assume that you are singling out this one NPC because you know him to be carrying a message that will interfere with your employment? Yes.
This would hold true for me sending someone into Shola for any job that might interfere with your employment. As such you're forcing me to take back my action because you're just going to attempt to block it.

I can appreciate you attempting to stop this. You have a vested interest in that message not going through. Going about it this way annoys me because its fairly obviously acting on OOC information.
The right way to do this, would have been..Ignoring it/Reminding the GM's that you're in the area. The GM's would know you're in the area/be reminded of it, they'd know you'd probably want that messenger intercepted, and they'd roll for it. Forcing an action on it says 'yeah I know theres a messenger. I have no reason to know IC that theres a messenger, but damnit, Im acting like I know.'

Now there isn't. Or is there? But at the very least, it will be secret, and you'll actually have to post that you're doing patrols specifically to single out people from Mileth and accept whatever consequences that brings.

You know, you had the opportunity to hire me a while back and avoid all this. And no, Nuke's vanished and CG is overworked. Considering I haven't posted much in the RP thread due to the fact my character is mainly doing mundane stuff, I doubt he'd remember. But fine, whatever.
