Good source of nutrition, light, and (if the wax is heavy), a makeshift club.
Truly, a large, heavy candle is all any traveller needs these days. Heck, you don't even need clothing, just coat your entire body in wax.
It is like a medieval towel. The 'Lift-Grubbers Handbook to the Storm Coast' recommends keeping on on you at all times.

Also magic practice, I suppose.

Eh... maybe a roll with minor consequences. I doubt the nobles would attack you with no preparation like that. I'll do you a roll.

The candle is more a source of fire than it is magic training. If I need to cast a fire spell, it's a hell of a lot safer to already have a source than it is to create one on the spot.
