I thought you were going to attempt to bribe Kain to put in a good word for you.

9d towards the 12 i need, at a 20% tax PLUS 40% of the 4/yr gained off it...extortionate lil wanker he is

40% taxes, only a 5% sales tax...odd combo

Fiscally insane to set up shop in Suul under the bishop's current ways. So, time to work on plan B...

The archbishop is indeed an extortionate little wanker, though the usurious loan was not contingent on you setting up shop in Suul.  The Archbishopric is a weird economic entity - every major institution is owned and operated by the state, even though there isn't exactly the sort of socialist people-care you would expect.  Hence the 40% income tax - you could never get away with that if the companies weren't nationalised anyway...

The problem is that the tax itself allows for the size 3 guild to pay upkeep on only a single ship. Out of the 4 income, i'd only see 2.4. The 3year return on the business is also unhelpful when 3/4 of it is in a 20% loan. Making it actually 4 years to return a profit. Unless there were some way to join the Order, which apparently functions the same as a guild. Once again though, if the state eats 40%/yr that doesn't seem profitable or sustainable when i have 2 of my own ships to support.

Which is fine, just means I'm not using Suul as a backer for my own guild...i'll just try to use Suul as a backer for my takeover of the SCTG

The guild system is nice, but requires a hefty population of players -as- guilded merchants to truly function well - unless there were an NPC modifier that were included as well. Otherwise the higher guild ranks giving a percentage allowance of 'dues' is immaterial.

I have training the next 3 days of work. I'll see if i can think of something.

Ah, so I see that CG is not having a great time with organisation of his own guild. it becomes apparent that you either have to either stike a deal with me or roam the seas in between me and the SCGT.

I can see though that there might be some opposition to me in Erik's court, but I do not expect royal lackeys to know anything about the economy (they haven't shown anything so far), and putting them in charge will be equivalent to wasting the economy.

Thats the idea behind the exclusive trade rights. Competiton may be good, but it will boil down to couple of small traders trying to fight each other off with meagre taxes under current system.
On the other hand, Crown will have a direct control of the economy through me and I will probably pay a sizeable flat rate on the monopoly rights instead of the trade taxes, which are dependant on the trade rolls.

Kain knows plenty about economy, he doesn't speak in all that gibberish about taxes and deficits and allocation of resources.

Economy is like business, you produce the things people need/want and sell them to the people, you use most of the profits to produce more things to sell, but you only want to do it to the staples or else a problem like the great depression in America could occur.
If you mass produce staples that people need, food, clothing, housing you create economic prosperity, simply becuase of the constant need of such items.
Then you skim a bit off the top to line your own pockets.
Everything else is just salesmanship.

Kain knows plenty. He hates people who send letters and make money from it, thats the first reason he dislikes Hans at an instant.

EDIT: Said Ardas instead of Hans, sorry.

I can see a rivalry already brewing then. Shame that Kain is not a economics minister or something, that way I wouldn't be needed. Unfortunately for him, its the men who send letters and make money off it that rule the world.

Erik needs someone who can give him direct control of the economy and boost his revenues. And the current setup doesn't cut it.

My Dad says business is just a case of talking straight, not making excuses, being punctual and to the point, ect. So basically being a good businessman is more about having the right personality and proficiency rather than counting beans and having a great deal of intelligence or mathematical ability. And hey, I'll take his word for it as he's managed to go from failing completely at school and joining the army to running the European branch of an American furniture supplier. Except that's probably not really the case in a roleplaying game which probably makes the previous point redundant, ah shucks.

Except you dont have an agreement with the King yet, so i'm not really concerned. And that monopoly you want so bad doesnt look to be working out for you...

^I support the two things above.

Your going to bring about problems within the goverment, of course there is going to be a rivalry.

Hopefully instead of killing him, he'll just try to convince the King not to work with him :P

Anyways, Erik supports Hans' proposal. Kain does not, and Terenos appears to be opposed to a monopoly but is otherwise apathetic. A lot is riding on the Grand Master's response now. Were Locanil still in Elbreth, Erik would likely have asked for his advice as well -- likely looking for previous historical examples of such dealings and how they went wrong or something...but he's not :P

My only concern if i were king would be his willingness to sell out his former employers. That might not go over well with them

I don't think Erik knows about that yet (I'll reread the proposal in a second to check).

Monopolies are bad. Taxing merchants is good. If he wants a monopoly, he damn well better pay for it.

That said, Yeah I pretty much don't care. Its trade. If I have the authority to shank his 'monopoly' and leave it bleeding in an alley, I will. Please note, I'll do it in such a way that no one will ever know its me. So..Yeah. *shrug*
