Oh yeah, those of you using that character generator I linked should note that you start with 500 XP, not the usual 400. If you took a Package like Johnfalcon did add +100 XP to whatever is left on the generator's Starting XP and it should work out. It's probably best if you spend them on advances beforehand. Think in terms of what your character would be good with. In this campaign I plan to use every skill at some point. While Basic Skills can still be used without training you probably don't want the half-value penalty that comes with untrained use.

I also encourage you guys to figure out how you were placed on this ship. To give more background, your adventure begins aboard a Free Trader ship called "The Wandering Pilgrim". The Pilgrim travels with a convoy flotilla for safety and their route primarily winds between Port Wander and Scintilla. Its current captain (spoiler: he dies) makes his living for the most part by providing travel options for all classes of Imperial citizen. The poorest are typically Hivers enlisted to colonize a newly secured world in the Koronus Expanse and are on their way to Port Wander where they'll catch smaller ships taking them to their destination. Because their fare is paid by others (and in the Imperium, life is cheap) they usually get stuck in the massive Cargo Holds normally used to transport goods. Sometimes WITH the goods. Nobles may be traveling anywhere in the Calixis Sector or be there for the ship itself, either to enjoy the Pilgrim's impressive luxury facilities or to do business in a pleasant neutral-ground environment.

Characters who are pilots or otherwise skilled with a Void Ship are easily explained as existing crew members. If your character is Void Born he or she may even have been born on it. Even Guardsmen/Arbitrators can easily be counted as among the many local forces used to keep order aboard the ship. These characters are also going to know things about the ship that characters from other backgrounds won't.

If you've got something crazy, like a Moritat assassin from a Feudal (i.e. Medieval) world, you'll have a bit more work to do but it can be a rewarding experience.

I might have to come up with some contrived circumstances to get you all together once the action starts. For the first adventure expect a lot of combat, some piloting of smaller space craft, tech-use, and a bit of cipher breaking. I've got quite a few ideas of how your characters can accomplish the primary goal (with various difficulties associated) but if you run out of options you'll be in deep trouble. Fate points can only get you so far.

Uh... Maybe my guy stowed away on the ship amongst a bunch of his fellow no-hopers, off to settle some new planet, with the shotgun he stole hidden up his... Er, shirt? He could be huddled away amongst the cargo hold, fearing discovery if anyone someone recognizes him.

You could also hook up with our prime Rogue Trader candidate as a personal bodyguard and person who generally gets things done. As our "Arch-Militant" you'd fall into such a roll easily. Of course when you guys receive the Warrant of Trade your duties can be expanded to include commanding the boarding parties and such.

EDIT: Oops, forgot to address the size.

You guys are running on a modified Vagabond-class Merchant Trader. It's listed as 2KM long and 0.4KM abeam, although Warhammer 40K ships tend to be a mess of sealed bulwarks and other unused areas, so in practice it's quite a bit less with regards to usable area. This is more-so the case down under in the area usually called the Underdecks or the Bilge. Down there it's maze of lost passages and infested with THINGS which may have been human before, but no longer.

The Vagabond is operating at the 18,000 listed crew size, give or take, at the start of the adventure. This does not include the passengers who likewise number in the thousands.

Wait, I'm an arch-militant?! :o
Well, I suppose I could fall on the 'candidate's' mercy, begging forgiveness for stowing away once I've been found out, or something. Sadly, my knowledge of 40K's lore isn't that great... In fact, the books for Rogue Trader and Dark Heresy and such seem like they would serve almost as well for providing info on the universe as they do as rulebooks. :)

I could have been paid to be the Nobles Bodyguard, seeing as most Nobles know about the Moritats.

Edit: If you don't know much about 40k, I would advise you to read the Lexicanum

It has lot about 40k inside it.

*looks at Yoink's character sheet again and facepalms*

My mistake. For some reason I noted you as a Guardsman. Must have been because of your chosen Primary Characteristics. Since you seem to want your character combat oriented you could still function as an "Arch-Militant" of some sort... you'd just have a more Scum oriented approach to doing things. I'm freeing you guys from the standard system though, so what your character does depends on where you take them.

I could have been paid to be the Nobles Bodyguard, seeing as most Nobles know about the Moritats.

That might work too. You'd have to work it out with forsaken as to the specifics.

A few questions:

1, Are we still using the origin path thingie?

2, Are we only supposed to buy wounds for points, or do we still roll a d10 for it in addition to the toughness bonus?

3, How does the "Exceptional Characteristic" cost? I think it says 20, but wouldn't it be 10 if it cost's 2 points per buy and you can only buy it 5 times?

And probably more that I can't think of now.

If you'd like you could be my bodyguard and loyal retainer, traveling under the guise of a personal servant. A noble's personal servant is an enviable position, because they're generally basking in the same luxury and security as the noble himself.

Nope.

2, Are we only supposed to buy wounds for points, or do we still roll a d10 for it in addition to the toughness bonus?

When using Point Buy you don't roll. You start with Toughness Bonus x 2, Homeworld Bonus (if any), and can buy up to 5 more Wounds using the starting points.

3, How does the "Exceptional Characteristic" cost? I think it says 20, but wouldn't it be 10 if it cost's 2 points per buy and you can only buy it 5 times?

Normally you have a limit of +20 to any characteristic when using Point Buy to increase them. With this Merit every 2 points you spend that maximum increases by +1, up to +5.

You still need to spend the points as normal when raising that characteristic though. So if you wanted to raise a characteristic by +25 at the start you'd spend 10 points on the Merit and 25 points on the characteristic, for a total of 35 starting points.

If you're using Point Buy, check to see if your Homeworld is on the "+1 Fate" list. Otherwise yeah.

He's still Void Born, so I think no, but I do get them cheaper ;D
Related, since I'm not very experienced, how many fate points do you usually need? And what is they used for? I can't find anything about it in the books.
