Best handheld gaming device?
« on: August 13, 2011, 10:10:59 am »

I've been craving for a handheld gaming device lately, and I've been considering a few options.

At first I was thinking of the 3DS because of the price drop, but I'm worried that it will become obselete soon. Not to mention that consoles are pretty limited and the games aren't cheap.

Then I saw the Xperia PLAY, it looks neat, with a nice built-in gamepad and all. But it runs on Android, and from my experience (and someone else's), Android apps tend to be more unstable than the iOS ones.

Also I think the iPod Touch 5 might be released soon (following the iPhone 5), and even though I do not like Apple, I think the iPod is smoother when it comes to apps.

Suggestions?

It depends on what you're looking for. There's Android and iPhone, and I've had both of those, but the games are usually nowhere near 3DS or PSP quality. The 3DS lifespan is not looking so great but it has a few okay games.

Your best bet would be a DS, I don't suggest the 3DS since its a big gimmick. So get yourself another kind of DS, all of the other handhelds are pretty much crap :/

What this guy said. *cough cough*
The PSP is an alright game system on its own, but you can make it much, much, much better with some effort.

I'm not really sure about the PSP. Most of the games I want are on the DS, and the 3DS costs around as much as the DS now since the price drop.

Also I understand what you guys mean, but isn't that *ahem*? Also last I recall, you can do that with the 3DS too, you just need a *cough*flashcard*cough*

The bad side, though, is that you can't update your firmware without the risk of your 3DS bricking.

that's the point, the *ahem*. Still, i would understand buying monster hunter, fun with friends *tm* and certified to be, but many games that come out for psp come out also for playstation 3, playstation 2 ( it's STILL ALIVEEE) and pc. while it's true the 3ds is relatively new, with new games and all, i could argue that all you actually need is ONLY a pc, since there "are" emulator for: wii, gamecube, gameboy, gameboy advanced ds, psp, ps1, ps2, xbox360(REALLY BADworking and ONLY for a halo game but can't recall which one) and probably the 3ds 3D isn't all that worth it. at least, i dunno.

so, i'd buy the psp, and monster hunter, just for monster hunter.
But that's it.
or the DS, since 3ds meh, isn't all that worth it, i mean, what's the point ofh aving 3d if you're going to play it around the world/globe/while moving, and for 3d you'd need to be in a specific position?

Meh, I'm not getting about all these craze on Monster Hunter.

I'd get 3DS for FFT A2 and other JRPGs.

then go for it, but if there were their counterparts on DS normal, you'd be better of with the normal ds.

But I'm thinking of buying the android or ios devices instead, they have more uses and they emulate well, too.

The psp vita looks alright. With the AR that is talked about by sony. Some cool things could come from that.

Thing is, using the chip for *cough* *cough* is pretty illegal, right? Or at least Nintendo hates you and wants to destroy you if you use it.

I'm also worried about the lifespan of the 3DS. Nintendo's struggling with it currently.

EDIT: I've also thought about tablets. Tablets have a nice, big screen for gaming and browsing the net. Really useful I'd say.
