33c: U-bends create infinite floods
« on: November 25, 2007, 02:14:00 pm »

...or at least, I think that's what's causing it. Whatever hack Toady put in to account for water level equalizing in U-bends seems to result in infinite water. Some images to demonstrate what I've got going...

I figure it has to be the U-bend, because I've drained lakes like this before (off the side of a cliff) without flooding like this. The starter lake (in the first picture, on the left) never goes below 6 on any square... in fact, everything from the starter lake to nearby the waterfall top is solid sevens.

There isn't an aquifer touching part of that lake, is there? That would keep filling it up forever.

Nope, no aquifers on the embark screen.

Embark screen can have more than one biome type. Have you checked to see if maybe part of your map differs?

think something's wrong with new water code...

This was a pump that simply pumps the water let in from the river back out....

now....

No, no aquifers in any biome.

I just tried basically the same setup with a pond and it didn't create infinite water. It's either something with cave lakes (that is a cave lake right?) or an aquifer, or something more specific then just a u-bend.

no acquifier. no cave lake.  this is just a simple brook.  The only thing special is that I had a pump above a two level deep channel that is supposed to pump off excess water that flowed up to the higher cell in order to maintain the water level below.... so in essense, it is a "u-bend" so as to speak.

Screw pumps create more water in front of them than they destroy behind them. I believe it's been mentioned more than once before.
For now, just deconstruct the pump or whatever is powering it. Or turn them off if you've got a lever set up.

There are no screw pumps in this design.

Sure, but sphr didn't have the same problem.

Is it raining? Maybe the lake is getting constantly refilled by rain, or something. I doubt this is the issue though,

Try it with an independent body of water.

Any flowing body of water which goes off the edge of the map contains an infinite amount of water. You can't drain brooks. I've tried.

Don't believe rain does anything like that yet.
