Ohh gosh... I played that game INTENTIONALLY badly with buildings that only made people unhappy and I still made tons of money.

Seriously, what the fuck was with the death in Fable 2?

You get a scar, lose all the EXP on the ground and instantly revive with no other penalty?
Who thought this was a good idea?

Peter Molynueax, thats who. He's the one who makes most of the shitty decisions for Lionhead games. He's the one who decided that having armor in fable 2 was too much "hassle" for players, so removed it ALL. He makes these dumb choices all the time. If lionhead got hold of Alpha Centauri.... ugh... THAT would be horrifying.

Remember now, he came up with the idea's for dungeon keeper, and was the original creator of populas. The issue being now that he tries to get these systems implemented but oftentimes not enough time/funding to keep going so he's often stuck.

I don't think it's that per se. I think its more that, now that he has Hollywood-level production tools, he gets farther away from a good idea and basically gets lost in his creative freedom. On paper he says he wants a game about a hero where 99% of what you do shapes and molds you over the ages, from childhood until you're an old man....

What we end up with is one tutorial act as a child, and then a progressive graying of textures and wrinkling in the second act. And scars. The system that underpins all that though? It's literally one step above Zelda in terms of depth or simulation. Everything that could interestingly be realized in game play terms in Fable, he opted to just deliver visual rewards.

And that's the issue. I think Molyneaux worked better with more restrictions. When you can't spend your time creating your "visual storytelling masterpiece" what do you focus on? The game and the stuff that goes in it. You write systems to achieve what you can't through high quality graphics, voice acting, sound ect....

And I'm only talking about Fable here. Fable 2 and 3 basically told Molyneaux that people still like what he's doing on this front and that his "vision" will still draw gamers. Personally I haven't been able to bring myself to look at Fable 2....I want what few good memories I have of Fable not to get buried under a wealth of stuff I know I'll find annoying about the sequels.

Uh, have you listened to him lately? He came up with the so called "one button combat system" and the notion that anyone should be able to immediately be "good at it" when they pick up the controller. Although with Natal he started going on about how controllers were actually an obstacle in what they were trying to do. I'm pretty sure time and funding ain't the reason his current games are what they are.

The Peter Molyneux that came up with all the great Bullfrog games is long gone. What remains is a senile old man telling tall tales and trying to make games accessible for babies.

Which is pointless because what does mastery offer you in his design? NOTHING. There are no nuances to reveal or manipulate, no tactics which are the reward of understanding something and becoming a master of it. When you become a master of DF, you can build whole worlds with that understanding. What exactly does being good at a one button combat system get you? To the end of the game? Well that's money well spent.

So my predictions, they'll make the indigenous lifeforms a playable race. They'll also have come from another planet this time and just tagged along, and coincidentally landed at the same time.
This race's objective is naturally to declare war on everything and somehow survive when every other faction is better off with it dead.
They'll remove the west side of hills have more nutrients mechanic.
They'll change the drones/talents mechanic, for a simpler, easier to handle happiness mechanic.
The unit customization thing is completely out the window, much too much of a hassle, completely pre-set units all the way!
Oh, and the entire game is an rpg about discovering alpha centauri's buried secret. You play through a series of campaign missions where you use a sacrifice style command mechanic to guide terraformers to build buildings.

There'll probably be some other changes too, but that's what my predictions are.

Well I don't blame Peter for Black and White 2 (it was a production nightmare) other then him pretending it turned out well.

Fable 3 is all him though.

I get your sarcasm on a lot of other things, but why would you be upset for a change in the drone mechanic? Are you wanting to play Civilization II?

If a new game comes out, I actually don't want it to be a carbon copy of the old one. That's silly. The designers need to change something. Why would I pay $50 for a game I already own?

Oftentimes the changes fall flat, and that's regrettable. I'd be more concerned if they weren't there at all.

Alien Crossfire is a must-have for me simply because it enables playing it at full desktop resolution.

Yes, I'd much rather see a rerelease of a previous game updated for compatibility than a rerelease of a previous game updated for graphics and to charge me $50.

I own the Linux version of Alpha Centauri. A bit buggy at times and doesn't work like a charm, but after some tinkering I got it to run.
