What do you bring on terrifying embarks?
« on: August 12, 2011, 12:22:36 pm »

Just curious what other people are doing. I recently started a terrifying shrubland.

To deal with the constant onslaught of Ogres and Harpies, I've got two of three marksdwarves on duty at all times, a militia of three miners, and a doctor.

Everyone but the doctor started with shield skill.

One dedicated military dwarf.  Preferably a swordwarf or axedwarf.

I bring one proficient hammerdwarf. That's started being standard, though, so I don't really bring anything special on terrifying embarks. I don't find them to be too terrifying.

I tried one speardwarf on my first embark, and he got murdered by an ogre, and my dogs got tossed into a ravine by some harpies.

If you're going to moat/wall off your fort, why bother with a terrifying embark?

well it may still terrify the migrants and caravans and harpies can still fly over. It's to keep away ogres and skeletal herbivores who can really kill a warrior dwarf.

"I'll not dig the moat because it makes terrifying embark too easy"-type thought is kind of alien for me, sorry.

I don't wall off completely and only use doors instead of drawbridges.  First time I embarked with 3 axedwarves: one got kicked in the head by a skeletal moose and ogres broke in and killed the other two shortly after.  Re-embarked again, this time with two axedwarves and two marksdwarves.  Waaay better.

I was planning to bring a hammerdwarf... but on this embark I kind of forgot to give her the skills... but that's not an issue because I haven't encountered any ogres quite yet. Only skeleton hordes so far.

My oldest fort nearly died three times early on to ogre attacks--we had a mayor both whose arms were torns off in year 3, he ruled until the year 12 (bronze collosus accident).  It was an above ground clay fort with numerous entranced, numerous gates and slowly developing organic clutter of a city, which made defending it especially tricky.

Can't go wrong with miners and picks. Investing some points in another military dwarf or giving some dodge/block skills is also useful. If it's just some harpies, zerg swarming with untrained wrestlers tends to be effective.

I haven't done terrifying embarks in a while, but I'd probably bring the same weapon-trainer dwarf I always do.

Sometimes, terrifying embarks are easier than other embarks.  Zombies are total pushovers, for instance, but make good enough training dummies, and do a good job at spotting ambushes for you.

Other times-- a werewolf comes in and eats half of your starting seven.

I always embark for danger anyways.  Playing on terrifying, you just have to play it by ear.  (Pay attention to the "ere the x get hungry," for instance.)

In the one time I went to one, here's what happened:
1) Brought 3 dogs as defense.
2) Built wooden palisade ASAP.
3) Trained dogs in the Art of War and chained them to bridge entrance.
4) Dog eaten by skeleton badger. The pup replaces it.
5) Woodcutter eaten by skeleton badger.
6) Fortress eaten by recycle bin.

Axedwarves usually work well for me. My marksdwarves keep getting murdered by fliers, while I can just keep my axedwarf away from ogres.

Since we're talking about ogres, ogres are super fun. They're one of the few creatures still capable of doing that 40d-esque "send dwarf flying half a screen and explode into pieces hitting a tree" thing. I love having dwarf bone scattered all over the place.
