Tacticus- the P&P RPG
« on: August 11, 2011, 10:07:35 pm »

So, against my better judgement, I'm going to start this. Here's how the whole idea got started: A couple of friends were over and we started talking about DnD, and I don't own it or know the mechanics for it, so I said you guys do something else while I google it. Obviously I never even typed the letter g and went straight to the Bay12 IRC and said I needed a free table top RPG. After a little bit of talking, I decided on tactics. With some left over poster board, boxes, and pretty much what ever else, we constructed a map (we will NOT be playing with a map, btw) and decided the three starting rules 1.The player to the left of the DM goes first 2.You are allowed to create one rule or define one thing per turn (limit subject to change) and 3.the DM's call on what constitutes a stupid rule. Twenty minutes in we had a five page word document and I was hastily typing in values for weapons and monsters, and even came back the IRC to ask how to calculate poison, (which worked great, I don't remember who came up with the value). So, I figured, this would be easier as a forum game, wouldn't it? And, tentatively, I created this topic, and requested six participants. Will you join up or stay away? This RPG is anything the first six want it to be, and parts of what you want it to be later on! Who will join me?
(This cannot end well.)

Reserved for rules and world definition shit (which will eventually just be done in .wps files later).

Its still a good idea, a nomic being a game where rules are suggested and voted on. It could be used to create a short pick up and play game, part of the game being creating the game itself.

Voting on rules? This isn't about consensus, this is about throwing wrenches in each others plays with subtle rule shifts.

hmm, I'm fine with making up rules as we go along. But I worry about games that don't have much structure. It's hard enough with a well known system to keep things moving without being broken, let alone when you are making stuff up as you go.

That said, make up an introductory story, give us some basic idea where to start with characters, then I guess we can get started. Otherwise, I'm not sure exactly what you are trying to do here other than checking for interest.

Oh, and I suggest checking out Maptools for pen and paper games online, as it contains a dice roller, and a 'board game' type thing included with a real time chat. Good for gaming sessions that involve things like combat.

Trust your calculator. It's something to count on.
Pencils could be made with erasers at both ends, but what would be the point?

I'm not sure how well real-time would owrk out, and I was planning to run it through the forums. As for background, well, I was kind of expecting the first player to act to do the background. There's probably a very high chance this will be a civ game, seeing the popularity yet also rarity of those, or there's a high chance we might end up having the thread move over to RtD. The whole thing is a mixed bag, really.
EDIT: I'll look over maptools because we'll probably need them, as this won't go to well without a map.

If nobody else picks it up before school starts over here, then I'll start with fewer players.
