Best Embark Sites

What are the best embark sites you've ever had. Many of my embark sites were not right for me, as I die at the end of the first year.

I like odd combinations, especially if they can lead to large amounts of Fun. One of my personal favorites was a volcano in the middle of a mostly frozen ocean with a section of glacier in it.  My volcano sprung a leak at one point and much Fun was had.

Idk. I guess my best embark was a grassland with magma in two caverns, loads of flux and iron as well as many trees, clay and sand as well as a natural waterfall in the northwest corner of the embark, crocodiles were a pain in the ass though. My dream embark though would be a large circular and flat plateau with sheer cliffs on all sides in the middle of the ocean with a small dirt bridge about 3 tiles wide going from the map edge to the plateau at ground level. and forming a small beach around the bottom.

:( a man can dream.

If adamantine is perfectly rigid, as shown by having 0 strain at fracture in the raw files, then the speed of sound in the metal approaches the speed of light. Adamantine musical instruments would produce ultrasonic vibrations, and cut off the fingers of the musician.

It is possible for Dwarf Fortress to generate that. Here is the percentage chance of that happening 0.0000000000000000000000000000000000001%

Then again, keep dreaming :-\

playing in a mirthful wood, i embark, and theres a sign that says "you have come to happy fun ville" or something equally s forboding.
i go a z level down and theres a hydra den, i sealed off the entrance pretty fast and am planning on using it in my forts defense somehow

Aside from that, being rational is not only optional, but is frowned upon.  We hate elves.  We kill for socks.  We sacrifice nobles.  We love kobolds.

Dang, all I have is a volcano surrounded by shrubland with flux, hematite, fire clay, sand and a regular stream in the northwest corner.

Even though it isn't exactly what you want, I did find a very nice peninsula a while ago. A couple dwarf-years worth of mining could get it pretty close to your dream site. Just narrow the land bridge and remove most of the ramps. The land is only 1z above the ocean, not exactly "sheer cliffs". I think it also has iron, flux, clay and sand. However, If I recall correctly, there is a point down below where the aquifer is leaking into the caverns. You might want to obsidian plug that with DFHack before it murders your framerate.

I changed several of the settings in world gen (like there is only one cavern) so you'll probably have to copy and paste the entire parameter set to recreate them.

Of course, my current fortress is a little different.

An island in the middle of the ocean with a small isthmus just wide enough for wagons.  Chokepoint for invaders, anyone?

Volcano, sand, clay, river, flux, bit coal, tons of iron ores, gold, tetrahedrite.  Literally everything you could want, and the slope around the volcano is gradual enough for substantial aboveground pastures, right where I embarked.  17x17 pocket region.  Trade from elves, dwarves, and humans.

The world is here http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=4521

The Foldedlens community game was started on the best embark I could find in that world, the one described above.

My personal favorite is over here. Seed and embark location are provided.

Volvano, sand, flux, clay, brook, aquifer (if not modded out), iron, coal, other metals, plenty of candy, plenty of trees/plants, flat, but with a sizable peak available for above ground use. Wilderness and Untamed Wilds both.

It's my favorite test bed site.
