Someone needs to make a community fort of this.  Or maybe a hermit style challenge.

I once found an island that fit into a 5x5 embark, it was nice, didn't freeze every winter so the fps was good, but i totally missed having traders ,Also i made an obsidian bridge to the edge of the map and all my wildlife buggered off and i never saw them again... there was nothing left to kill except whales so i abandoned...

Nothing ever comes that didn't start there on the surface. You get to live in total isolation, pretty good for a hermit challenge or last dwarves alive scenario. I think some stuff can spawn on a frozen ocean edge though, remember seeing it once. So until the thaw things might be able to come and go.
I think that only applies if your embark had a connection to begin with, if you somehow make ne with ice, obsidian, or dfhack the game still won't realize migrants and traders are avaliable.

Traders are not available because they cannot swim across the ocean to get to your fort.

Traders are not available because they cannot swim across the ocean to get to your fort.
What if they were modded to be aquatic traders?

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.

I don't believe that the game is actually scripted for that. Oceans are considered impassable obstacles as far as I know.

I'm pretty sure if you use multiple embarks to build a bridge from an area with a civ to your island they can come. Simply building one to the edge of your own embark won't do anything.

You don't need to build a bridge, just abandoned embarks are fine.

19th timber 1051;  a caravan from the mountain homes has arrived.  They spawned on the edge of the map, on ice, while the ocean was frozen.

So much for being isolated. I think i need an island in a tropical biome.

I should note that my isolated island was founded by humans, I guess Dwarves couldnt care less as long as theres somewhere solid to stand on at the map edge.

you should have seen my face when I thought "OMG A REASONABLY SIZED ISLAND EMBARK?" and then I discovered that it was over 6x6.   which is too much anyway.

I find islands like this all the time,
but they are too big for me to run comfortably, especially given my nature of fucking with pumps day in day out.
