Can I Make Engravable Walls?
« on: August 10, 2011, 04:27:14 pm »

So I got my dining room in clay... just cause I wanted a centralized fortress. Anyways hah after getting it all setup and getting rolling which I am at the moment I realized that granite walls... can't be smoothed then engraved? I may be doing something wrong but that was my play to mine out the walls then replace it then engrave it just like that but is this possible?

No, constructed walls can't be smoothed or engraved. Only natural rock walls. :c

Make tapestries! Oh please make tapestries! =D

Everyone can engrave... If you want to record your forts history, and make your dwarves happy, sew images on bags as makeshift tapestries.

Awesome! And very dwarvy! =D

I may be wrong but building a wall from a stone block will let
you smooth and engrave it

Nope.

The solution happens to be magma, as always. That and water.

I vote for this answer... but alas my last endeavor with water ended in an underwater base. Yea know what that sounds like "fun" just gotta learn HOW pumps work a little better hah.

That's not a bad idea either though... It is safer, which isn't as fun! Haha I dunno. Can you place decorative items like this on the wall? Like hang them up or do you kinda just leavem on the ground around the area?

obsidian is a good idea, if you don't have access to magma, it is possible to mind away the walls and build a stone wall using b-C-w, idk if they engravable

Sadly they are not... seems kinda strange that they are not I keep telling myself it MUST be for a reason but what if I wanted an above ground fortress? DAMNIT I need to engrave then too :P

An interesting option could be frescoes.

At the very least, it'd be another use for plaster/clay and dyes.

Walls made of blocks are smooth, but can't be engraved.

You could just line the walls with statues instead.

Hmm dunno why I didn't think of that myself. I am still gonna remove the walls and what not though cause it looks better to me... in time so its kinda a waste but OH WELL statues it is... now I am off to see if they record history in statues?

Stone "block" walls are considered smoth and can be turned into fortifications.  However you cannot engrave them.  Instead just make some nice bags and ropes and sew images into them.  Then make buildings out of them

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.

They do. I'm not sure if you can look at them afterwards in adventure mode, but they're all statues of an event that happened in the game.

...or cheese. You may end up with a dining room with walls shaped like cheese.
