Preventing auto-gathering of eggs?
« on: August 10, 2011, 03:49:58 pm »

In short, can you?

I'd like to breed my war buzzards and cave crocs, but the dorfs always seem to beat me to the nest boxes to gather the eggs.  At least according to the wiki, once they've left the nest, they are only good for food, so no point forbidding them then.

Just lock the animals in.

I think it's the way towns develop now. In the beginning, people move into a town. Then they start producing tables, which results in more and more tables. Soon tables represent a significant portion of the population, they start lobbying for new laws and regulations, putting people to greater and greater disadvantage...

or disable the option to store buzzard/cave croc eggs in your food stockpiles. if there's nowhere to put them, your dwarfs will leave them in the nestboxes

Yeah.  Thus why I didn't make a trap.  In it's current state the fortress didn't need a trap, the whole damn fortress is a trap.

Ah, brilliant.  I have the nestboxes outside, so locking them in would be troublesome...  I'll disable storage and hopefully that will do the trick.  thanks!

Build 2 or 3 nestchambers - box, walls around it, door. So you can both breed and eat!

Would it be correct in assuming that without a roof the flying animals would just fly over and in?

It is my understanding that fliers don't have proper pathfinding, so birds will likely not be able to fly over walls to get to their nest boxes.

I heard about this in reference to flying invaders being a bit worthless, though in my experience invaders mounted on flying creatures have worked fine.

You lock the door when you see your animal breeding. Whether the animals can fly in or not is a moot point, your dwarves cannot go in and harvest eggs.

To be fair, you really only need one clutch of cave crocodile eggs. Few creatures allow you to blow past the 50 animal cap as amazingly as cave crocs. Twenty to EIGHTY eggs per clutch. Yowza!
