No, didn't think of it. I pretty much never pray... but being a priest I should take advantage I guess, next time.

Yeah in general, if you're in trouble, try praying. It solves a lot of problems from what I understand.

Also on the food discussion, monks also have a lowered hunger rate compared to other classes, so you might give them a shot.

Gnomes are great magicians.

I'm... so lame. I can't get past the first quest! The damn crazy guy (Yggrog?) at the bottom of the dungeon to the south-east of the first village.

I always play as either wizard or elementalist, and without fail he kills me in one or two hits, while my spells don't seem to do anything. I can get through a dungeon, killing everything with one hit, but this guy, he took two spells before one-hitting me. I'm lucky if I get spells off, usually I go around the corner and he one-hits me before I even see him. :(  How do I beat him!?

You're not supposed to kill him, you're supposed to rescue him. Set your tactics to "coward" and lead him back to the healer that's up a few levels in that cave.

For people complaining about the food situation - honestly, there is shit loads of food in ADOM. The Crawl food clock is way worse. Head to Terinyo buy as many large rations as you can, and don't spend any time wandering around the wilderness when you don't need to - cutting down time in the Wilderness is a good idea anyway, what with the whole 90 day thing.

Eeyup. In comparison to Crawl and especially NetHack, ADOM has much more resources available to the player. NetHack is a game where everything's finite in some way, and Crawl doesn't make infinite scumming easy either... ADOM, on the other hand, is fairly relaxed. You have the artifact of infinite money, so you can buy everything in any shop. And buying shops clean will result in them getting more stuff, which you can buy again. If that's not enough, there's an infinite dungeon for your playing pleasure, and a Casino that has very friendly payoff rates. The only limiting factor is the background corruption, and even that can be avoided with some trickery... I'm almost tempted to say that ADOM is a *band in disguise! :)

The best way to progress in ADOM beyond the Terinyo quests, especially for characters who start with healing, is to just not do the Terinyo quests. Buy those rations, then head straight to the CoC or through the Small Cave into the Unremarkable Dungeon. Screw the carpenter, and screw the puppy.

Seriously, ADOM is pretty nonlinear up to a certain point. If you get stuck someplace, loosing 10s of characters to similar situations, just try somewhere else.

I recently got this game on my Eee PC. It was something of a hassle remapping all the keys to hjkl movement, and really drew my attention to how shitty the UI was. Seriously, a key for cleaning your ears? Separate keys for  showing the damage statistics for kicks and weapons? Did they not have menus in the nineties?

Anyway, despite numerous irritating design choices, I'm having quite a bit of fun with this thing. Currently starting a shitton of hurtling thieves for the dagger of penetration.

Oh... Oh my gawrsh.
In all my years of playing ADOM I had never worked out exactly what the hell you were supposed to do to get that damn healer to 'train' you. :o Gonna go load up ADOM now!!

I got bored of hurtlings and decided to startscum dark elven thieves for a change. I finally got one with three starting talents for the sweet dagger of sweetness, and I'm doing pretty well. I'm on level six or something of the Village Dungeon, and just slaughtered about twenty pixies. I think there was a tension room full of them somewhere on the level, but they broke out before I got there and just teleported all around me. They left me with over five thousand gold. The guy in Outlawtown demands completely preposterous prices for everything, but I'd really like to get to spend some of this stuff before I die an embarrassing death. Are there other good places to find shops?

Also, the pick pockets skill pretty much lets me pull free items out of the monsters' butts, yes? Goblins never seem to be randomly carrying magic rings when I kill them.

EDIT: Well, I found the carpenter, and brought him to the healer, but the bastard refuses to teach me. It's because black chaotic, isn't it? Stupid racist healer.

So, uh... what now? Can I do something else to make him trust me more?

Check this out. Offer's a lot of alternatives, although most of them are tricky, have a negative side to it, or are at least harder to do.

Aww, but I don't want to kill the healer! :(

Can I... Can I change my alignment? Yes, the wiki says I can, with an altar.

ED: Well, the point just became moot as I was killed by a minotaur. WELP.

Woodcrafting lets you cut down trees with a hatchet more quickly.  Yeah.

Rumor has it that woodcrafting lets you deal more damage to animated trees but I don't think that's been confirmed anywhere.
