ADOM: The crying game
« on: August 09, 2011, 01:27:53 am »

This was originally a question about ADOM thread but it's now an ADOM thread.

ADOM, being a roguelike, is pretty damn hard, so know what you're getting into. I unfortunatly do not know enough about the game to fill out this post more, but I've been enjoying it, give it a shot if you're disenchanted with nethack or crawl.

Eh, it should be fine to run on windows the beta. I have been using for... two-three years on windows seven and vista, and I havent managed to find any technical problems with the game.

Okay, thanks! Here's hoping I don't find a way to wreck my computer with a roguelike of all things.

Yeah, I've played ADOM a lot, and it seems to work fine on Vista for me!
The only problem I had a couple of times was easily remedied... The game just wouldn't load after a while, simply copying it to a new location fixed it. :)

Will it work on 7?

If it works on Vista, chances are it'll work on 7.

I'm pretty sure the issues depend on whether your running 32 or 64 bit. Because I've been unable to get it to work, even using compatibility mode, since I switched from XP 32 bit to 7 64-bit.

Anyway, just download it. Either it will work or it won't, it's not going to fry your computer or anything. And if it doesn't work it's probably just not worth the trouble to figure it out. It's a fun game but it's not like we're suffering a dearth of rougelikes these days.

It works fine on Windows 7 64 bit. I just back up my saves in case the game corrupts them, though.

I used to play on XP and corruption (data corruption, not the ingame type) did in my Dwarf Priest... best character ever.

I played the DOS version on XP 32 bit for years and never had a single issue.

There's a non-DOS version? Anyway, the DOS version runs in DosBox, although I haven't tried any serious games with it.

Yeah, tried it last night, works fine on vista. I'll keep the "copy to a new location" thing in mind if it stops workin though. Now to begin the potentially multi year length of attempts to rescue a puppy. First notable death: Walking up to a ghul, getting paralyzed, then hit like fifty times and as a result dying.

Just don't pick that one talent that adds +2 or whatever to all your skills. It makes the game crash when you complete character creation. At least it has on every windows machine I've run it on.

Noted, good thing you mentioned it as I'm a sucker for that sorta thing. :P

And as another question, is there a corpse spoiler anywhere?

It seems like making sure you don't eat corpses that are abusing your main stats is a big deal, but maybe I'm overestimating it. I don't think the ADOM guidebook has it but I may have just missed it.

The guidebook does have it, look at the appendices section and there should be a monster list. The corpse effects will be listed there. After a while you begin to memorize what you should and shouldn't eat.
