Can't figure out machinery
« on: August 08, 2011, 03:32:57 pm »

Okay.

xxx
xxx
xxx

Thats my windmill.

Two levels down, below it, is a pump.

I see these axels and the gear assembly. And I go: "DERP!"

How do they work?

I build gears next to it. Inactive.

Do you HAVE to use levers to activate windmill power transfer?

apparently you dont. it just disengages it. no matter what I do, the power from a windmill wont connect to axles or gear assemblies

assuming there's a hole underneath, power comes out the bottom of the center of the windmill. you need to have open space to cross levels, which is acheived by designating the tile in question as a "channel" before installing the machine.
here's a simple diagram, if  understand what you are saying:
approximate side view:
=0=  <-mill
+|+   <-vertical axel in channel
%%_ <-Pump

check the wiki for more details: http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Machine_component.

edit: although, looking closer at the image.. I;m note sure what you are trying to do there...

Since I don't want to clutter up the forum with stupid questions, which I assure you this one is going to be.

I have about 6000 power running through my waterwheels... and I have no idea what to do with it. :|

There's surprisingly little you can do with mechanical power. I think powering millstones and pumps just about sums it up.

Ofcourse if you take the latter into epic proportions you can make some amazing stuff such as the dwarfputer, but hardly anything particularly useful.

Also to the original question: I do think windmills generate power underneath their center, similar to real life windmills. You could even make a more advanced windmill with a millstone inside a nicely made building with the windmill ontop, for a nice medival look.

I've copied this, question: it doesnt use a gear assembly?

Do pumps work faster with more power going to them?

What has been said before is: the windmill needs to be at least 1z ABOVE the pump. Make a small platform over the pump, place windmill there place the axle/gear between them, and you got power... sometimes. Some maps don't have wind, so keep that in mind.

I object to this! you can power entire fortress defenses using fluid logic!

Your issue simon is that the power only goes out BELOW the center tile of the Windmill, as has been pointed out before.
