Sorry for the wait guys, I was helping the library.
Since this is kind of a test to see where my skills as a GM lie, it would be cool if you could give feedback! I want to make sure people are actually having fun. I was wondering, what should I adjust? Do I have too much detail, too much text, or what?
While I was at the library, I tinkered a bit with coming up with a mechanic system. Of course, whether I implement it or how I implement it depends on you.
Here's a sample. I'll add more if you like this.
PopulationPopulation is the number of people available to do tasks. Population is gained from a roll of a dice each turn. To increase population gain, extra Food may be consumed (feast). Different settlements give different amounts of population per turn, based on the number of smalls inhabiting them. Unless enough Food is supplied to feed all the Smalls in the inhabitance, it does not gain population for that turn.
Inhabitance | | Minimum Smalls | | Base Pop. Per Turn | | Food Bonus | | Base Food Storage |
Camp | | 10 | | 1d2 | | +1/2 per Food unit | | 20 units (5 OMU) |
Village | | 40 | | 1d6 | | +1/2 per Food unit | | 80 units (20 OMU) |
Town | | 80 | | 1d8 | | +1/2 per Food unit | | 160 units (40 OMU) |
City | | 160 | | 1d10 | | +1/2 per Food unit | | 320 units (80 OMU) |
Metropolis | | 320 | | 1d12 | | +1/2 per Food unit | | 640 units (160 OMU) |
FoodSmalls eat light! Each Small consumes at least one unit of Food per turn (about one meal). If there is not a ready supply of Food in the area they live in, it is assumed that they are brought food by caravan. This food is subtracted from the closest place with surplus food (unless otherwise stated). Feasts may be held to raise morale and increase population gain for one turn by consuming Food (extended feasts are possible, but still consume the same amount of Food). Feasts lower production, however. Food can be stored indefinitely in Storage Areas (provided something bad doesn’t happen). A Food unit is equal to about ¼ OMU.
TravelThe base speed of a Small is two tiles per turn, though this may be influenced by terrain factors. Rough terrain decreases a Small’s speed to just one tile per turn. Easy terrain can be traversed at three tiles per turn. Travel lanes double the speed of anyone traveling them (regardless of terrain) but are more noticeable by predators. This can be countered by placing guard towers to protect travelers and caravans or somehow camouflaging the road (you can put it underground or come up with an even better way to defend it).
Is this good? I was thinking that each race would have "Easy", "Normal", and "Rough" terrain. Example: Snaug would be at home in the Mud or in Shallow Water, but deep-sea races like Lofani or Ul'mare might have trouble traversing shallow areas.
