Moving caged hostiles?

Hi guys, just picked up the game over the weekend, and I've got a question for you :)

How does one move a cage containing an imprisoned hostile unit (be it badger or goblin)?

I had some caged badgers, but when I tried to trade them to the elves, the dwarves merely moved the cages to the depot, letting the badgers loose amongst my fortress... thankfully my catapults had line-of-sight on my farmland. >.>

The caravan attracted a few goblin ambushes (and died to them, after angrily picking up their crap and leaving in a huff - they demanded a wooden bin when they didn't like an offer, then got pissed when I said "okay".  Their deaths were a tragedy.  Just a TRAGEDY.), which managed to cage themselves up... but after the badger incident, I don't really want to risk moving the cages to a more jail-like location without asking for some assistance...

If you want to move cages containing creatures you can use an animal stockpile, or you can build a cage and select a cage with a creature in it to move them. Creatures will only be taken out of cages if you try to trade captured creatures

Nope, but you can try... it's Fun  :P

If it worked, I'd capture whole trade caravans with cave-in traps and sell them the next year... Human trader: "Oh, you've got some lovely traders captured there. I'll sell you everything I got for last years caravan."

You can't move a wild animal or hostile further than one square without the dorf looking back, freaking out, and letting them go. You have to tame a wild animal to avoid that problem or creatively change your stockpiles.

Are you sure about this, in my current fort I drop all sorts of hostile creatures down a pit without any of my dorfs freaking out.

Are you sure about this, in my current fort I drop all sorts of hostile creatures down a pit without any of my dorfs freaking out.
Is your pit set up like the one on the wiki? That design makes sure none of the creatures have to be moved further than one square.

Im not sure about the wiki design, but mine has them being moved up a few floors so they may enjoy a healthy plummet down to spikes.

I always put a 9 z drop so I can have spike traps and animals waiting at the bottom but also dig an additional 1 square channel underneath some of the chutes to insta-gib them. What I meant was if the cages are within 1 square of the drop then you shouldn't have a problem. Otherwise it's very strange they don't break loose.

Dwarves should have no trouble dragging around most hostiles and wild animals, the creatures which cause trouble are the theif types (baby snatchers and kobolds usually), those guys will slip out of the dwarves grasp and go running around.  Another cause of problems I have run into is stray military or wandering dogs attacking the creature being dragged, causing the dragging dwarf to let go.

I've never been able to do it reliably, of course that's likely because my average layout has war animals following each dorf.

I;m not sure about war animals, but I know that trader's bodyguards will attack hostile enemies when you are moving them.
