Wacom are the best of them from my exprience, id say go for the "bamboo" first before getting the more expensive ones.

"Wacom!" Is what everyone says. Never tried anything but Wacom myself, so I can't really give an unbiased recommendation.

The Graphire I bought was about $150 at the time, which to me is nothing compared to what I'd happily drop on GPUs or other hardware. And considering the non existent difference in price of the other brands, I decided to play it safe and go by the internets opinions.

Had it five years or so now and it's still working, never even had to replace the tip or pen. Surface tends to get a little scratched, but it can be polished up with some apple sauce or something similar.

If you get one, be prepared for a bit of a learning process. It's not entirely unlike pen and paper, but it's definitely not the same either.

Huh. I've had the exact same experience with my graphire, haha. Except for polishing it with apple sauce, I mean, that's just kind of alien

anyway I am pretty satisfied with my tablet so I'm pretty sure OP would be too.

I own one of these. They run over $200, and are still the cheapest in their line. Amazing, though. Absolutely no complaints.

If you're maybe not looking to spend several hundred dollars, these are supposed to be pretty good too. And you'd be hard pressed to find something under $75 that isn't a total piece of junk.

This is true, a tablet does not mean you will immediately be 100% better at creating beautiful digital artworks. There's a learning curve. Once you get the hang of it, though, it will make things easier.

Well, Wacom's tablets are special because of some patented thingy, so they don't need batteries in pens. And that's really important.

Anyway, Intuos 4 Medium here, and I can say these are really good if you have the money. Big enough to comfortably work, but small enough so you don't need to move your hand too much.

And don't forget about proper software. There are many image editing programs, but few can handle the functions of tablets.

I use Paint Tool SAI and is what I'd reccomend to anyone. Works really well with Wacoms and was pretty much designed for tablets anyways.

Well... if you work on a very low budget, do what I do and get one of those ~$50 Wacom Bamboo Pens that are pretty small. I use it with GIMP/Photoshop with all of my drawings. Would certainly recommend it. Yeah, I have no idea how they make the pens battery-free. A++ tablet would buy again.

Echo other comments about the learning curve, but it's not too steep.

Yeah, I have no idea how they make the pens battery-free.
Electromagnetic fields, mostly. Using some oscillating to detect position and ... actually I have no idea. Here's some nerd text instead:

Umm... I better clarify. I didn't mean apple sauce. I meant Applesauce. Or something similar.

Edit: And... err... this works on the Graphire since it has a detachable plastic cover. (Don't think the bamboos do?) Long story short: dont smear strange chemicals on your tablet unless you think you should.

There are different bamboos. There is pen-only, touch-only, and pen+touch. They have different prices, obviously, but if you are willing to pay a bit extra can have both pen functionality as well as touch functionality.

Pen is all you need. Besides, touch sounds bad. Like, smudge everywhere while leaning your hand.

Yeah, Pen is definitely all you need. I've used to pen+touch version, it was pretty precise but still not as great as using the pen. Biggest difference is you can't lose your finger like you can lose the pen (I got a case to prevent this).
