More cavernous caverns
« on: August 08, 2011, 11:01:59 am »

At present caverns just aren't very exciting. Yeah, they're places to find wood and wild animals and water, but I consider them annoyances, obstacles on my way down to the magma sea. However, today I found a huge cavern on my embark. About 60 tiles wide and 15 z levels tall, with a giant lake at the bottom, my mind was instantly filled with possibilities for building there. Rooms around the dome with windows onto the lake! Noble rooms in the small rock columns and stalactites! Entrance to the fortress via a huge walkway above the lake! It was huge, and it was brilliant. More caverns like this would definitely make me build in the caverns more.

You can adjust all this through advanced world gen.

I know you can adjust caverns across a single z-level, but I don't think you can affect them across multiple z-levels to create huge open chambers.

Anyway, it would be nice for "normal" worlds to have such caverns too. Now either you stumble on one of them and it's amazing, or you change your world so they're everywhere and not amazing at all.
It would be cool to be able to look for them, but how ?

I'd settle for more aboveground entrances and the option to search for them in site-finder. It'd be really neat to build a fortress into a natural cave right from the get-go, and it would make irrigation more fun.

Using the following parameters when you gen a world should get you something like this.
CAVERN_LAYER_OPENNESS_MIN:100
CAVERN_LAYER_OPENNESS_MAX:100
CAVERN_LAYER_PASSAGE_DENSITY_MIN:0
CAVERN_LAYER_PASSAGE_DENSITY_MAX:0
CAVERN_LAYER_WATER_MIN:1
CAVERN_LAYER_WATER_MAX:10

My problem is that caverns simply dont contain enough aggressive and hostile creatures. When I go Cavern, all I get is singular trolls or ogres with some elk birds hanging around.

I know how to make them wide and open, bit I'm talking about 10 z-level high cathedrals. So far there's nothing in the parameters which affects cavern height.

Yep, something like Skocjanska Jama would be neat (bridge at 75m high, another 30m above it. This underground valley goes for several kilometers (roughly 1.5 km available to public. It is a pity that fantasy world is actually less astonishing than real life  ;) )
