Radioactive Tunic
« on: August 08, 2011, 01:52:10 am »

So I had a dwarf create an artifact rope reed tunic using 2 pitchblende blocks and a piece of reindeer leather. Normally I'd have this guy burned for being a pansy hippy lover, but I can't get over the thought that he put just enough awesome via harmful radioactive ore into this thing that I should spare him. Any thoughts on what to do with the dwarf/artifact?

Artifact description: The Realms of Mystery, a rope reed fiber tunic.
This is a rope reed fiber tunic. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is decorated with rope reed fiber and encircled with bands of pitchblende. It is made from rope reed fiber cloth.
On the item is an image of dwarves in pitchblende. The dwarves are traveling. The artwork relates to the foundation of Swiftfall by The Named Apes of The Avalanche of Escorts in the early spring of 126.
On the item is an image of black-caps in reindeer leather.

Obviously give the shirt to a noble. Nobles love the color purple.

The ore is normally fairly safe to handle, as the U content is pretty low.  Most basalt/marble is at about the same level of radioactivity, iirc.

I'm currently debating giving it to my baroness who currently literally has 50 dwarves wanted on the justice screen because she had the bright idea to forbid the export of iron items when the caravan was a couple of tiles away from screen's edge, or leaving it outside for the kobolds to find.

EDIT: spelling

Okay, unfortunate accident time. If it's deadly, give it to her. If it isn't...nobles LOVE lava.

Give it to your militia commander - you never know, he might get a mutation!

It's a pity radioactivity isn't implemented. I'd imagine that Dwarves could potentially dig deep enough (considering they breach magma seas and all) to find it. I could definitely see myself paving the map in various radioactive materials.

There's an easy way to deal with nobles - put a channel leading into their room filled with water and a floodgate keeping it out hooked up to a lever somewhere out of the way.  put a drainage grate in the center of the room with a lever-operated hatch covering it.  Drown the noble, open the hatch to drain it out (extra dorf points if it's pumped back into the same trap) and be ready for the next mandating-loving noble to reside in.

I wouldn't want to get mud everywhere, so I'll probably make a suicide booth for her. It's gonna suck losing a legendary miner, though, so I might hold off. She went from around adequate at time of appointment to legendary digging in my marble mine. If I find any cotton candy I might just make a whiffle bat and designate a hammerer to use it.

On an unrelated note, the reason there are pitchblende blocks involved with construction of this tunic is that I always bring as many as I can for construction. I like to imagine the minor amounts of radiation are slowly turning my dwarfs into supermutant midgets.

Put a small bedroom in with the nobles with a dwarf warren'ed to the noble's area who's only job is to clean.  That should fix the mud problem, in theory.  Otherwise a small room with the noble in question assigned to the warren there should work.  He/She'll go in and stand there happily.

Easier way.
1) Catch Giant Mole in cage.
2) Put cage in room.
3) Pull lever.
4) ????? ("To shreds, you say?")
5) Profit!
