Ok the screen centers on the pitch blackness some 7 z levels below my fort, so no dwarves are being harmed, so what do you folks think is going on?

My guess is:
Water hitting the middle of a lava layer which forms obsidian, which being unattached, falls to the bottom of the map hitting simi-molten rock and getting destroyed.

Yes I have aquifiers, so I'm wondering if I dig to this wonderful hot stuff if the auto cave in can be stopped. if not then I'll have to change the behaviour in the settings to no longer pause and center on the cave in.

You've got some weird cavern stuff going on. I don't know how to be any more specific. Try using DFreveal (if that's the right name), part of DFhack. It'll show you the whole map, so you can see what's happening.

And yes, you'll want to stop the pause and center. It's not like it's doing any harm, so that function's not useful.

Dfhack and dfliquids will also let you "stopper" the leak by creating a wall of obsidian where ever the water is leaking into the magma.

Thanks guys, I was actually wondering any dwarfy way to do it without getting any dwarfs killed, like cave in a solid wall to block the leak.

The challenge is to start with nothing more than the dwarven knowledge that there is a cave in happening to get the thing seen and utilized for dwarven engineering, so while the utilities named are fine, I'm just sending word back to the mountain homes and asking for advice (posting this thread).

How far from the impact point on the lava will the steam knock down or kill dwarves? both in X-Y and Z?
