Build! Explore! Loot! (Maptools freeform rpg)
« on: August 07, 2011, 05:17:52 pm »

Hey guys.

I've been toying around with the idea of using maptools to GM a game. And I'm thinking it will probably end up being sorta like Multiworld Madness over in the RTD section.

This will use Maptools 1.3.b86 from http://rptools.net/
You may also wish to make your own token with the tokentool.

Maptools server info: Name: 'Aglaia', Password: 'unekaru'
Server probably won't be online other than days we have sessions.

Hey guys, here's some basic mechanics I've been thinking about. Nothing is set in stone:

Don't expect a bonsai tree to grow the miniature planting it.
Trust your calculator. It's something to count on.
Pencils could be made with erasers at both ends, but what would be the point?

GURPS has everything.
It's boring, though, or so I've heard.

I just suggested GURPS because I've been told it's a fairly decent system for this sort of thing. I could always just make up a basic system of stats, and a d100 roll system, or use something else if people are interested.

As to being boring, well... I have plans for that as far as the story goes. I'm kinda thinking of taking my Crafting game premise and turning it into a maptools session game. With the Aglaia being a base of operations, that can be changed, built upon, and moved around. Something with a little more freedom than the pure crafting versions the forum games have.

An idea I've had for a while is making a "DF" game with Map Tools where how people build the Fortress actually matters when it comes time to defend against goblin sieges, kobold thieves, and rampaging megabeasts. Essentially it would be a giant board game of Dwarf Fortress. I'm not sure how interesting it could be in the short-term however, since it requires a lot of mundane preparation and manual labor if one wishes to simulate the experience of our bearded friends. Individual players would have to take care of their hunger/thirst/happiness to survive (like a non-combat health bar) by exploiting their dwarf's preferences whereas the Fortress itself would have more complicated needs. Then again, a simple mining expedition to find more iron could turn into a Happy Fun Clown Party.

I'm not sure how closely this resembles your crafting game, but I'm just throwing out the idea since it's pretty much an extreme crafter's RPG. It also has the interesting side effect of creating maps which can be used with future games in a similar setting. It's a sneaky way for GMs to let their players do most of the dirty work of establishing the layout, history, and treasure for a dungeon.

Ok, I've decided I will in fact go ahead with this. And just use my own system for things( using the simple d100 roll with 50+ being success, extremes crits, and GM modifier based on difficulty. With an additional contested roll for attacks vs dodges, with the better roll succeeding).

There will be crafting! Combat! Building! NPC kidnapping/slavery! Magic! Fun of all kinds.

Those wishing to sign up, need to give me a name, age, gender, and some sort of background, it can be a simple class name, or a decently large bio. Try to keep your tech level at around medieval or Renaissance eras to start. I also need to know when is best for you to play a maptools game. Sessions will probably last 2-3 hours at least, depending on how long people want to play.

I'd like to get at least 4 people to give this a go.

Age: 22
Gender: Male
Background: Knight

And I can play at most times, though 4-9 AM GMT I'm usually sleeping...

Maptools can be found here: http://rptools.net/ You'll want the latest version, 1.3.b86

I'm going to be attempting to set up a server, that people connect to. Then it's basically a chat room, with dice roller and some graphical board game like elements.

And I decided to go against using GURPS, and just wing it. Looking at GURPS it looks far too complicated for what I want to do.

I was thinking around 5pm EST. Maybe a little earlier or later, depending on when people are available. Maybe on Tuesdays, again if people are able that day.

Ok, I've set up a maptools server, if either of you are around, I'd like you to try and connect. The maptools alias I put in was Aglaia, with the player password of: unekaru.

Therefore I believe it should show up in the maptools server list. I'll stick around in here for a bit and see if people can connect to me.

Well... great. I've had issues with some maptools games requiring Hamachi to connect to an artificial LAN. I'm on a router, and that may be the issue.

I'll keep looking into it for now, but until then, would people interested be willing to download and use Hamachi for this? I don't like using it, but it may be the only way I can host a game.
