To be honest, full on roleplay in a play by post method gets difficult quickly. It tends to either move very slowly, or have plot errors due to people posting over each other or making mistakes that the GM has to be able to spot. There's also difficulty in knowing things like line of sight or range of weapons and other distances.

I'd still suggest taking a look at maptools, and considering at least a session to test things out in that method.
