Long time listener, first time caller. (Questions, too!)
« on: August 07, 2011, 02:05:47 pm »

So here I am, logging into the Bay12 Forums.  I'm not sure whether to feel happy about this, or sullenly admit the loss of what little remained of my soul after all of this Fun.  So much Fun.  So, so much Fun.  <shudders>

So, hi. :D

First things first.  You're all soulless husks of what might have once been decent human beings, drafted into a sort of moral apartheid from your better natures in the pursuit of things made out of cute animals.  I love it.

I've got the LNP, and I've recently squished the Genesis mod into the main game folder for extra Fun.
Here's my 1st question:  Where do you find DF nirvana?
I don't need more things to micromanage--things that make the game even more difficult are unnecessary unless they are so awesome as to be worth it.

2nd question:  Genesis, is this the best quality pack for additional content out there?  Any other suggestions?  My focus is almost entirely upon the "Fortress Mode".  I like the Phoebus tileset (and Mayday to a slightly lesser extent) but I understand other things (like Dwarf Fortress Plus) have their own graphics as well(?).

3rd question:  What are the absolute most important things to you personally, when you're building a fort?  Favourite tactics, general rules on handling annoyance or early survival, and especially some military advice.

4th:  Embarking... Do you use preset teams? (like the tutorial, or the Mayday, or LNP ones)  If not, what are things you almost universally want to have in a good embark profile?  I'm looking for personal opinion, not general guide.  I want to hear how you guys function when you're playing the game all by your lonesome.

5 is more like a comment:  Yes, dick-shaped rooms DO make for great throne rooms.  I've tried it.  I made a giant anatomically correct guy, and i killed kittens in his balls to make a ...self-stimulation reference.  The decaying purple sludgy misty stuff that eventually burst forth was a hilarious way for so many to die.

And finally:  What is the most hilariously horrible thing you've ever done/seen/experienced?  Work for it.  I'll most certainly be sharing my future adventures in pithy comical form, I assure you.

Hi.

1) No idea what's DF nirvana.
2) Fortress defense mod is quite good too, and it's got tiles.
3) Space economy. If the furniture stockpile is three tiles away for the wood stockpile instead of ten, it's a plus.
4) I start with three miners, one woodcutter/metal worker, one carpenter/mason/mechanic, one brewer/fisherdwarf and one planter. It's my standard setup and it never failed me.
6) I think it was the time where I was dropping prisoners in pits full of trained helmet snakes. Maybe it was the time when I placed all the babies of the fortress in the same room to bait the invaders inside and then flooded the whole thing with magma... I don't knoew, I've done a lot of horrible things in DF.

Aww, shucks.
Here I am trying to figure out why I can't make make baby bone spears and ride goblins, and you're already sigging me.  I haven't even gotten to the juicy parts!  ;D

But seriously...
I installed Genesis over the normal game in the appropriate LNP folder.  Now nothing works properly.  Whee!  Back to my more vanilla days (+ LNP once I change back) ... I'm looking for the most expansive DF possible, while not veering out of 'theme' too much.  Genesis seems great, and I'd rather not add religion to the mix (like some of the mods).  Ideas?  Thoughts?  Ways to do it that won't make me break my install like I just did?   :D

See?  I make friends, then I just suck them dry of their knowledge like some kind of Dwarf Vampire.  ...Dwarfpire?  Ooo.  Dwarfpyre.  I think I just figured out how to get those baby bones AND make a great defense...

1) Not really nirvana, so much as a constant stream of maniacal laughter. Megaprojects are my favorites, though, when I manage to do them correctly.
2) Genesis is the best. I'd say another good one that's still DF is Fortress Defense. For total conversion, Corrosion is good. I haven't tried many other mods.
3) My most important point is to make sure my dwarves live through the first year. Second most is to stick with the fortress theme, or goal. Past that I rarely care. I've gone upwards of 7 years on a fort without any meeting area designated and only communal beds.
4) Okay, here's my standard loadout, in spoiler'd form:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
6) Most horrible: Let's just say I have the post about it copied and saved very far down in my folders, named "The Incedent." If anyone knows what I'm talking about, you'll understand.
There's also mermaid farming, children waterfalls, and the like. Most horrible I've done is probably dropping baby turkeys, as they hatched, dozens of levels over my main entrance, to splatter everywhere, just for the hell of it. Anything worse I've probably shut out of my mind by now. I'll see if I can remember anything more fun.

As for installing Genesis; I haven't used the LNP, so I don't know what could've gone wrong. Try installing it in vanilla, following the mod's directions, unless there was something else in the LNP that you wanted to use.

As for butchering babies, you'll have to change some of your dwarves' ethics. I don't know exactly what you need to change; might be worth asking in the Modding section.
If you want to ride goblins, they'd have to be radically changed. You'd be better off making a new race of rideable goblins.

And welcome to the posting madness! Hope you enjoy your descent.

Yes. I really never thought it was nearly as big a deal as the way some treated it.

1)I'm unsure if I'd call it nirvana, but anything involving absurd ammounts of magma and (dwarf) deaths tend to make me happy
2)Personal prefference, really. I find that genesis changes way too much and doesn't feel like vanilla df (still a good mod, however). I'd suggest Civilization Forge for a mod that still feels like the vanilla game. Search the modding forums, you'll find something that fits you there.
3)The only thing I always have in my forts are wrestlers mixed in with regular squads. Why? They can pin down enemis, allowing your other soldiers to finish them off.
4)No presets, I usually make it up on the spot. Nearly always have 2 miners, 1 mason, 1 grower and 1 carpenter, however.
6)The tantrum spiral during my turn in Targetguilds. Worst one I've experienced, could just sit by and laugh.

I googled "Dward fortress the incident", and nothing relevant came up. What is it?

People really need to get off the whole Obok Meatgod thing. It isn't that big of a deal.

I like to play with the normal tilesets: I think the crude "art" gives the game extra appeal. I don't use any mods, although I do mod my own game. I'm currently trying to make a seperate domestic creature entry for subterranean creatures: Naked Mole Dogs, Bugbats, Crundles and Elk Birds instead of Dogs, Chickens, Cats, and Cows.

I ALWAYS embark with 2 Miners, 2 Masons, a Stonecrafter, a Mechanic, and a Doctor. Finding good doctors/mechanics in migrant waves is hard, and a good stonecrafter working year-round will allow you buy out the caravan. I've had it happen where a caravan arrives and I have nothing to trade to them.

Also, if you want a challenge, add [CIV_CONTROLABLE] to the goblin entry in the entities folder.

I usually use 2 miners, a weaponsmith/armorer, at least one farmer, and a mason/mechanic/stonecrafter (pick two). The other two dwarves depend on the map.

It isn't that big of a deal? He committed every attrocity possible in adventure mode, with a single god-like character. Then he edited the raws to go a little further. I think it's a pretty big deal. Those posts were thoroughly disturbing.

I chuckled a bit when I noticed Gatleos uploaded that. Not surprising.

I tried to avoid it, but it's been fully brought up. The thread is as good as dead, if you follow the trend. Sorry, Corvidae; first topic, partially derailed by the Meatgod. You did ask for horrible.
