See if any other races have shield tech.  If so, we can probably trade for the starting shield techs for a song.

Also, having one point defense would give us one point of defense against lasers.  Cheesy yes, but it'll work.

War Council

Ok, i think first order of buisness is to get r&d to pump out the sheild tech asap, and possibly even looking at cycling our current ships to be re-outfit with sheilds a few at a time. We should grab the planets in our influence asap as well. We'll then need constructors, to build a forward base (military) to extend our range and act as a rally and fallback point, as well as a repair area, ill leave it up to the relevent authoritys to choose the modules, but i would recommend self defense first, because if we lose that base while in their territory, our ships will all fallback until they're in life support range. And i guess my dreams of terror can be suspended. I know theyre expensive blah blah.

TL;DR
lets burn those buggers back to their dimmension!

I agree with the shields on the new ships, do it.

EuchreJack, I don't care how cheesy something is. If it'll help the Alliance survive, I'm all for sticking a single point defense mod on each of the new ships >:|

So a defense of one will remain one, as with the ECM.

I know in a general sense how combat works. I was just using the generic term point defense for anti-missile defense X3

...You do realize, if you were abducted by aliens, you'd probably become much better at this game, due to firsthand experience.

Hmm, possibly. It'd depend on what rules this universe's civilizations run on.

GalCiv Rules: One building and one ship per world at a time, fast expansion
Aurora rules: split production, very slow expansion
Starcraft rules: everything runs on crystals and gas

Just a few examples  :P

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.
