Gentlemen! Please stop this petty squabbling. Obviously there are many different paths we can pursue for technological development, but by the end of this speech I think you'll all agree there's only one correct choice. Mark Twain once said, "Buy land. They've stopped making it."  His words rang true for many centuries. However! Now for the first time in all of human history we have a chance to prove him wrong! Ever since man first broke free of the bonds of Mother Earth's gravity has he not dreamed of traveling to distant planets? Ever since Neil Armstrong made the first human footprint on the moon have we not dreamed of colonizing it? Finally those dreams are in reach!

Furthermore, the resources of Mother Earth can only take us so far. Would it not improve production, support military bases and give room for our people to grow to have another planet's resources at our disposal? Another solar system worth of planets? An entire galaxy? Clearly before all else we must establish a human presence on any habitable planet we can!

On behalf of the Council of Colonial Affairs I would like to submit to the Council of Research and Development to pursue the path put forth by Comp112 and ask that our technological development at this point steer towards exploring space as efficiently as possible and settling colonies on planets as quickly as possible. Indeed, Comp112 recommends Planetary Improvements and I agree that it should be research at the soonest possible opportunity for the improved production along with its other benefits.

With permission from the Council of Research and Development I will work with the other member(s) of Colonial Affairs to file a report regarding our recommendations beyond the initial technologies. For now, half of the council approves of Comp112's plan.

(Out of character for a moment, thanks a lot for doing this Sirus-it's a lot of fun! Also I've never played any Galactic Civilization game and I'm struggling to find a good free guide with a tech tree and everything. Does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks in advance!)

((You're very welcome!  :)
Try the Galactic Civilizations Wiki. They not only have tech trees, but explanations of all of the techs in the game.))

Once we have a few planets, it becomes a LOT easier to get ships built. It means we can specialize our planets, instead of having just one 'jack of all trades'.

We need a space military.  Now.

Not really. It can take awhile to research good ships. Early ships in GalCiv2 are TERRIBLE. I'd wait until we research medium ship hulls and some weapons that don't suck first. Hell, there's no point to space warfare until we research the boarding module, and without any miniturization we won't be able to fit much shit on the ships anyways.

I'll support Basque's idea. We need to get the sensors tech if we don't start with it. Propulsion techs are also really important. The first planetary improvement tech is a big deal, though I'd rather wait until we actually have a use for it. Still, I can freely admit I'm a bit biased and leave things up to the research guys to decide what we do.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

Sirus, thanks for the link! I appreciate the help since I'm not experienced with the game. The only problem with learning the tech trees is the Twilight of Arnor expansion gave each race individual tech trees, and other than a partial screenshot I can't find a record of the TA Terran tree. However, the wiki did say that the Terran tree most resembled the previous ones, so I'll go off of those.

So for the Research and Development Committee I have the following to say: Researching research improves research for researching future research. In other words, if our research tree is anything like the old tree I suggest we go for Xeno Research. For one thing improving our research now will make better technologies and weapons easier to research in the future. I'm sure our warmongers aren't stupid enough to try and win a space battle with sticks and stones. Furthermore, in the past Xeno Research was a prerequisite for Stellar Cartography. If we don't want our ships colonizing planets by crashing into them at faster-than-light speed that would be nice to have. Not to mention certain Research and Development members might get some nice fancy labs...  :P

Submitted for the approval of Research and Development: Requesting research of Xeno Research as an initial technology or as soon as possible otherwise.

Sirus, sorry to bug you bug how far did you want us to go with this? After reading a lot of the wiki and related matter I have various ideas but I don't want to get too far ahead of things. So far are we doing so good? Do you want a plan in advance or us to only post when you ask questions or something? Thanks again for the cool LP, and good luck with everything

Edit: Mr. Person posted while I was typing, and since he's my counterpart in Colonial Affairs I agree with his view point as well. Xeno Research is also required for Sensors. Depending on what Sirus says he's looking for we can try to get something more elaborate together in the future.

Very well.  I then vote for military technology research to be a high priority, although I admit that we do need the more basic techs first.  But after that, it's space pwnage time.

I shall join the Research and Development committee.

I will further agree that Planetary Improvements is a must-have goal. Afterwards, I feel improved factories and research labs would be a sound investment.

Beyond that, I'd suggest terraforming, since we'll likely have a few regions that could greatly benefit from it. I'd advocate further pushing research and industrial facilities (or financial ones, if we feel the need) afterwards, since exploring the galaxy is, to be blunt, less important than colonizing it.

Once that's done, improved engine and sensor tech might be wise. We'll probably want enhanced logistics before then, however, since we'll be (by my plan, at least) relying on our existing capital ship for everything.

I am terrified. :P

IronyOwl brings up a good point I was afraid to mention because again I don't want to get to far ahead without approval from Sirus. Colonizing planets does cost money, so I would also recommend economic improvements like IronyOwl did. Through everything I say is just a recommendation-with 3 members the Research and Development Committee can actually vote on decisions now.

Pish posh, the best strategy is to just get into debt and colonize MORE planets! Mwhahahahahaha!

Ok, so MAYBE that's not very smart... whatever. Worst case we just build a few constructors.
