This is a Dwarven Let's Play!  We can't lose!

Although, having to declare war on a neutral power, while trying to pursue a neutral path ourselves, does seem to leave something in the friend department...

I must agree with my esteemed collegue on this point.  Evil always wins, because good is dumb!

With one neutral power pushing us around, and the other one overshadowed by everyone else, I think evil may be our best option.

Besides, the Yor are cool, even especially because they want to kill all organic life.

While I do agree that evil has some neat benefits, I think we should still hold off. We probably want to align ourselves with the Thalans considering how powerful they are. Now if they happen to be evil, well, let's go kick some puppies and become card carrying villians!

((And now the update title is even more accurate than before! Every screenshot before I ragequit is gone! FFUUUUUUUU))
((Ok, don't panic. I'll recreate everything up until then to the best of my abilities. It was mostly research, colonization, being extorted, declarations of war (none involving the Terrans) and impending doom))

2230
Year of Lost Records

Sadly, records from the first 2/3rds of this year are fragmentary at best. Former government historians claim that this is the result of an accidental EMP that was set off in the vicinity of the storage building. Regardless, they remain unemployed.

The year was marked, however, by slowly increasing despair. Despite great strides made in the scientific fields, the invention of Diplomatic Translators, and the colonization of several new worlds, the expanding might of the Krynn loomed large in the race's psyche. Several major events perfectly sum up the overall feel of the time:
  • Several wars suddenly being declared. The Thalans were the primary aggressor in many of these conflicts, though the Krynn started their fair share (mainly with minor races)
  • Despite the Alliance's growing military power, other races viewed us as more an annoyance than an actual threat, many times taunting us with news of their advancing technology or demanding tribute.
  • The Krynn worlds completely surrounded Terran space, out-influencing all but the major Terran worlds.
  • Perhaps the worst of all, word came in that the Star Swarm had discovered an Ascension Crystal, and had begun the long process of absorbing it's power. With enough energy, the entire race would ascend to god-like status.

MAX POWER! had had enough. He disappeared, along with his closest council members, for 48 solid hours. Many feared that they had abandoned their people. But when they returned, a new light was burning in the President's eyes. New orders were given, warships and constructors were churned out at a prodigious pace, and several talks were made with the Arcean Empire:

A new world was colonized, Starbuck IV:

Enhanced Miniaturization was also completed:

Sadly, even with this technology the NRDL remained a pipe dream (seriously! Two miniaturization upgrades, and the stupid small hulls still can't handle both a stinger and impulse drive!). However, as a sort of consolation prize, an upgrade to the Phoenix was made available:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The new ships were immediately put into production.

We received word that the Swarm had developed a new type of hull metal:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We quickly retaliated (metaphorically speaking) by building our own Ascension Crystal Harvesting Station:

The Economic Capital was finished on Embor I, nearly doubling the planet's income:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

In celebration, the people of Embor spent an extravagant sum on designing and mass-producing nano-sized repair robots:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
After a stern lecture, MAX POWER! rewarded the governor with a personal space yacht.

On the newly colonized world of Walleye II, a strange hermit was discovered living there. He claimed to be a scientist, and wished to be left alone:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It was decided that he would be guaranteed privacy in exchange for voluntarily sharing information.
((Seeing as how both neutral and evil choices had the exact same benefit, I saw no reason to be evil))

Walleye II looked to be a strong economic world, with various bonuses to improve the lives of the populace:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The planet of Starbuck IV announced the invention of Nano Recorders, which would greatly boost research efforts empire-wide:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

In an effort to boost the power and relations of the Arcean Empire (whose own territory was being infringed on by the Krynn),MAX POWER! offered an economic treaty. They gladly accepted, praising the generosity of the Terrans, their ancestors, and the next three generations of descendants:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
((Economic treaties boost the economies of both empires in the treaty. They are also a strong relationship booster))

And so, the UP assembled once more. The Krynn, Swarm, and Thalans used their overwhelming majority to halt a measure that would guarantee the loyalty of asteroid bases.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
MAX POWER!, who was always a little odd, noted that the graph for the three races looked uncomfortably like Pac-Man...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Alright, there's only ONE WEEK until planetary invasion is complete. Our fleet now consists of a mix of Phoenixes M1 & M2. Numbers are actually fairly even, as I colonized a couple of planets that made obvious shipbuilding worlds. I had to make an executive decision, and now our fleet is fairly large.
I will post the status of each planet later. Remember, tomorrow will NOT be an update day. The tentative new schedule is MWF = Play, TuThSat = Update. I'll probably take breaks on Sundays.
Again, apologies for the short update and severe lack of pics. Hopefully X-fire will behave in the future.
We need larger hulls. And better weapons to make ships I'd call actually threatening. Everybody probably thinks our fleet is weak since our military tech is a little behind. We've been focusing on noncombat techs. Well, when we're good and ready and steal a bunch of Krynn worlds, we'll have a ton of planets to dump research buildings on. Oh yes we will. Also, keep that ascension starbase upgraded. I had them off, so I dunno how they really work, but mining it faster is more than a little important.
We could totally use an alliance with the Arceans. The reason they wanted the econ treaty so bad is probably because we make a shitload more than they do due to how much bigger we are. That's good, they're basically vassals dependant on us. Should make it easy to ally with them and hopefully get a research treaty as well.
Can't say much about what needs researching/doing unless I have a list of planets. Failing that, a listing of planets that have the following problems would more than suffice: all squares filled or nearly filled, population cap reached, approval under 65%, inside enemy influence, or nearby hostile enemy ships.
Keep pumping out the phoenix m2s.  And I agree, once planetary invasion is complete, it's time for war.  I really wish we'd turn evil at this point.
Why are so many planets not producing anything?
Well, for economic and research planets, once all the infrastructure is down there isn't much left to do except make money/devote production to research. I'm also saving room for special improvements that will come along later.
Yeah, but planet like Boatmurdered still have 13 military production. Surely they could churn out Phoenixes?
The reason it has 13 military production is because excess social production gets transferred to military. I could still probably build a spaceport on planets like those, but that would be up to Colonial Affairs.
Welp, one trend I'm seeing is all our income-producing planets have low approval rates. Not bad on its own, but bad enough that building better farms will result in very slow population growth in the long term. Basically, we need better approval buildings before we can really crank the populations up any higher. Still, all our economy planets need at least one and possibly two farms to get into the making money stage. They break even at about 8 billion, the starting max without any farms.
Apparently, some of our planets have run out of usable tiles. This also suggests to me we may need soil enhancement. I wouldn't go too far down this path if we plan on remaining neutral, but the cheap cost and good use we'll get out of soil enhacement make me consider it.
I authorize you to build starports on as many planets as needed IF we have to do so to win the war. Chebychev III, Boatmurdered, Amcor III, and Starbuck IV are all good candidates for this process. If this means turning a few planets into production ones, that's fine. We could probably use more than we have now. The focus in this war is to specifically grab planets that are producing enough influence that they're threatening our planets. Obviously grabbing other planets is good, but the ones that are putting our planets in their zone of influence are the real problem. By the way, I want to see exactly what our soldiering is compared to theirs. That's the easiest way to see who's ahead techwise.
All still active colony ships (if any) are to take the nearest colonizable planet not in another race's territory. If unable, return to the nearest non-fully populated planet, dump their cargo, and then be sold off to the Arceans.
