Being young...it sucks but its great
« on: August 06, 2011, 11:02:04 pm »

Ok,im posting this because so far the dwarf fortress comunity is one of the best ones i have found, most of the people are polite, and if not,at least they are discreet,i post this here because i would like to think what others thinks, just curiosity and after all...life advice.

Ok so im in that really annoying period in wich you aren't either a litlle kid,or a teen/adult and it often prooves to be a huge disadvantage when playing games or doing stuff i like, also of course charged with a lot of emotions and drama wich i can't understand,im really not that...emotional or dramatic but anyway,i know it comes with it.

So,basiclly the most problems i have found are that very often things are focused on adult population as they are like 4/5 of the world's population,so many things that are actually made for...teeenagers are often dumb, lame, obviously cheap, and other stuff, for example, cartoons, the have become such an stupid comercialisation abomination,i mean,i miss cat dog,the old spongebob, invader zim, monsters, also, this happens with movies wich usually lack an interesting story or sometimes even good...acting or effects, lets say,Narnia,i read ALL books and they were childish but i got to admit that i enjoyed them and only some of them were QUITE good, but the movies are bulshit, specially happening with disney, all they make is crap,Pixar and Dreamworks are NOT disney, thats why their movies are so great.

Also happens a lot with games and other comunities,Dwarf fortress comunity seems easygoing,i LOVE dwarf fortress,i've sometimes played it up to 7 hours a day for half a week, but there are other games and comunity that because of interests/legal issues/etc. are a lot less flexible, for exaple,ALL of the minecraft servers usually have an age limit, and i know that we can get annoying,be inmmature, offensive, dumb and dramatic, but well...what do you think guys? in my opinion...its ok,just that it can be a bit unfair and annoying but well...its more accumulated frustration than actual disagreement with this age limitations, its not that im against it,but i've seen tons of places where,if you say you are less than 16 you will get attacked, banned, ignored, and is manytimes a sign that something will go wrong.

I mean,it has various reasons, sometimes its because of a whole lot of logical and good reasons, sometimes its just because a group of teens hate kiddies, but i seriously don't want to make this a rage thread so...what do you guys think about this whole thing? any advice on what to do when i reach situations like this one? maybe i wan't advice because i sometimes lie for that, and it truly makes me sick, having to lie about such a simple thing,so far some stuff that have been used are parental aprooval applications, wich usually solve legal problems,ok,i leave this topic up for discussion!

Of course that being young you don't have as much responsibilities and you can learn easily, wich i enjoy a lot,but i was more interested on what people wanted to say about the age limitations wich sometimes are really extreme

Well, I will be honest with you about age limits here. There's a certain demographic of Minecraft and other game players who hover around 12-13 years old and go on random servers just to be wildly immature and cause trouble and pain for everyone involved but them. I'm sure a lot of people are bitter to that. Other than that having an age limit, outside of legal reasons if you're showing something terrible, makes a lot less sense ???

If you dislike age limits on servers, you could make your own for your friends. You can even rent servers. They're pretty cheap if you have a few people. That's what I do with my friends because were too lazy to set one up and every server we went on we ended up being greifed. Someone forgot to whitelist it though so around 5 stacks of iron were turned into armour.

Yes its true, but wouldnt it be easier to say "anyone who
Wants in gets in but you will all be treated the same way"?

Meaning that if a troublmaker kid shows up,he will get the same
Consequences and punishments as the others, also meanimg he will have the same rights i.e. Admission in the server

I can't disagree, the thing is that it is qiite different from joining an playingnwith an actual community,so far this is the best option i have thought of but its true that 4 people with
Can't do projects such as the ones from minecraft middle earth, minecraft earth, ruined world or others, its not easy to add plugins either ir kake more elaborate games, also, setting up a server is incredibly hard, specially if its a cool one,but im sure there must be a way of making a good server without making such a fuzz,i should look into that.  Thx ;)

Actually, none of that is hard at all. You just have to be able to read tutorials.

I've stopped telling people my age, and let people judge me based on my maturity. If I act like a five year old, people treat me like one, and when I pull my shit together and act like an adult, I end up being treated like one.

Yeah, that's how most places work...the problem is that it takes a lot of experience to even know if you're acting the same way as the older people around you.  It's easy to be quick to judge the server admins, and say they dislike you because of your age--it's a lot harder to be introspective, and take an objective look at how you're acting.

Being actively good to the people around you, and really introspective, is super important.  Also, swear to god, I cannot stress the importance of good typing enough.  You will be AMAZED at how differently people will treat you if you take the extra time to make your typing perfect.  It might be a pain, but that's how you get treated the same as anyone else--plus it will become second nature and take less time as you get used to it

Just some advice from someone who's been there.

Why not just lie about your age?

yes, thats what i do but its really not cool because its a bit inrespectful and also,i get this feeling that i can't be myself or all the things i like and do fall down :/ like my friends can turn on me,or even worse,if an admin finds out then i get booted but my friends still recognize i was fine in the server,bu just because of that damn dreaded count of time in existence i won't be there anymore, actually once i DID say my age after lying and everything went fine because we were a close knit group, like 10 main players,25 important players and just a 30 person bunch of rookies that never played and didn't take the serer too seriously.

Now the second thing thats happening to me right now is that in my server i am requiered to use Ventrillo,i don't neeed to actually use a mic but its going to be VERY annoying because i will look at my mic and think of a good time i won't have :P

the reason most online game servers have age limits is based on the idea that it will cut down on the 11 swearing halo players that come a grief.

of couse older griefers can be a lot worse i.e. use ip masks or hacks

oh yes,i used to play halo a lot, then i changed mentally and saw two things: Not all of the franchise was good, actually there were very bad games, and that the comuntiy was formed by 12 yr old swearers with nothing to do but reach general rank while they weren't reachiing 10th prestiege, but im lucky i haven't seen any adult griefer/maniac.

We earned it,but there are other ways :/

On a side note, just to be sure you may want to start adding spaces after punctuation marks such as the coma and the dot. Although it doesn't really matter much in forum posts, I could imagine it irking people to no end in an on-line game, which seems like something you'd want to avoid, no?

i use punctuation on forums, messages, or chats but i refuse to use end-sentence punctuation or capitalization unless it's a formal occasion
