I train them with goblin prisoners.

I don't even bother giving my marksdwarves shields either, since my melee squads are the ones who engage after the marksdwarves soften them up or make them flee.

Pretty much.  I keep 30-40 strong melee dwarves (training traditionally and in the arena-- never with danger rooms), and then put EVERY non-essential dwarf into crossbow squads.
One side effect of this is that my "badger problem" is "what am I going to do with all of these badger corpses?"

I'd be interested in making it so marksdwarves don't need to physically reload, they just fire straight from the quiver, thus allowing them to wield two crossbows :D

I believe that the danger room is a bit over powered right now. But it seems like it is a legitimate way to train them because if YOU were thrown into a room with spikes that tried to stab you, either you would get very good very fast or you would get stabbed.  :D

You'd get very good at dodging blunt "spears" coming from fixed locations in a predictable pattern.  They don't care where you are, they aren't specifically trying to pierce your vitals, they just go up and down... At best, it would only raise dodging (and not nearly as much as it does), as there is nothing in this exercise that should be helping with Armor, Blocking, or Parrying.

I don't think it's "a bit" overpowered-- I think its on par with modding in a rock->clownite reaction in terms of in-game effort vs reward.

Never could make a danger room. Mainly cus I usually use all my logs for beds, cages, and charcoal.
Now for marksdwarves, I usually only use one squad. The amount of materials they waste compared to a good ol' rough and tumble axedwarves is extraordinary. And since I have yet to come across natural coal, the standard iron bolt takes up at least thrice it's regular materials

I don't use marksdwarves much, but when I do I generally train them via hunting and bone bolts. With how fast they become legendary while hunting, I'm surprised more people don't train that way.

I'd say it's the danger of being caught outside in an ambush, but you'd call me an elf.

There is no danger of goblin ambushes whatsoever if you turn off hunting every third month (Felsite, Galena, Timber and Obsidian) as that is the only months goblins come.  This won't help if you are at war with the elves however, since they can ambush whenever.

This is also a good time to have your military dwarves patrol the outskirts of your fort as to preemptively discover ambushers before they can endanger your civilian dwarves.
