New Dwarf Fortress Introduction/Tutorial, 31.25
« on: August 06, 2011, 01:17:50 pm »

Hi, I'm producing a new Dwarf Fortress introduction to new players/tutorial, in which I'll cover everything required for dwarf survival, and eventually FUN. I've only made my first video so far, but I'll be recording in bulk later. I bought a nice £100/$130 microphone for this as well, so I hope people can enjoy them! If anyone has any CC/recommendations for subjects that other tutorials perhaps skimped over, it would be hugely appreciated! Thanks.

I've never really liked video tutorials. Mind you, I've been playing for years so my opinion on DF tutorials doesn't really matter much.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

I feel it's still quite enjoyable to watch someone else play. You can get insight on shortcuts or improvements you can make. I'm hoping that my tutorials can do that for some people, but to be honest, my fortress organization is shit.

I find video tutorials very helpful if I know exactly what is covered in a particular episode. For instance, I could not for the life of me figure out how to get my military squads to do anything but train - the direct S screen without going over the generally miltary M one first evaded me - so I searched youtube until I found a video involving dwarven soldiers that were being ordered to do stuff. I might have bitten my keyboard into bits without that video. And there's still more things I'd like to learn, such as different defense techniques. Cage traps seem like cheating to me.

Could you post a list of what is covered in each video?

Indeed; a glossary-like listing of the features and techniques covered in each video would help overcome one of the downsides of the video format: that one cannot easily skim the material for relevant items the way one would skim a book.

I suppose subtitles are out of question? :(

So...when Today releases the next version, how obsolete are these going to become?  Will they have to be completely redone or just a few extra episodes added?  I've lost track of what Toady was entirely planning for this next release, but it was certainly a lot.

Mind that I haven't actually looked at these, but I do agree I like to see other peoples' technique.

It's something I'll look into when I'm finished. Someone else on Reddit asked about them, but it's a lot of work, but it's entirely possible.

It'll be pretty big, but I doubt there's ever be an update in which this will obsolete. It's just new features, new stuff to learn, new challenges, all that good stuff. But hey, there MAY be a radical change in the future. I don't know!

It appears that my grand well design, is in fact a crap design. I was under the impression that water pressure did not ever happen in rivers, as there is no pressure, seeing as it’s constantly flowing.

Oh how wrong I was. I’m rendering and uploading my most recent video now. I died like a bitch, and I totally deserved it. A bit disappointing, but I still covered a lot of the fundimentals, if any more information is required, one can use the skills gained from watching my tutorial, alongside the Magmawiki.

But this leaves a new fun question. What do I do now? I’m thinking of simply extending the tutorial to a new embark, perhaps on a mountain, and I can show you how to survive on a mountain, and perhaps get further than how I did in my last video.

If anyone has any… sensible suggestions, feel free to put them either on this YouTube video, or you can comment on the website. Whatever way I do it though, I will be continuing, so don’t fret!

Thanks for watching.

Next update has more to do with adventure mode I think - it's focused on developing towns, their inhabitants and industries, the sewers/catacombs beneath them, and various unpleasant critters that can live therein.

Some of the new creatures/syndromes will spill over into fortress mode - supposedly you can get invaded by a necromancer that can literally raise the dead, or a werewolf that can bite dwarves and pass werewolf-ism onto them, and so on. All the town changes might affect what traders bring as well.

But anyway, it doesn't sound like there will be any difference in how basic fortress mode stuff works, just changes to the world outside the fortress and how it interacts with you, i.e. invaders/wild creatures/traders. Which is definitely awesome in its own way, but not the kind of thing you worry much about in a noob tutorial.
