Super-easy Clowms
« on: August 05, 2011, 02:17:47 pm »

Most common clowns:
1) Spirt of Steam
2) Smoke Fiend
3) Vomit Brute
I've only seen 3 that aren't of this type.
30 Iron-plated Halberd dwarves should be able to handle this, right?

The vomit ones might be tough, but yeah you should be fine.

Open 'er up and find out! I'll be interested to know how this goes. My prediction is that you die, perhaps even just from those three that aren't listed.

Had a vomit FB once. It got scratched by a Naked War Mole Dog and fell into two.

Yes, FBs made of stuff like that are really easy. I lost a fort to primarily smoke, steam, and salt "clowns" once. Keep in mind this is granulated salt, not large rocks, as the material.

It seems that a given FB relies upon its materials for strength more than a clown does. The latter rely upon their (keeping it vague) special abilities. Read the wiki for more, I won't spoil it.

I've read the wiki and fought clowns before. Lye Wasps.
I'm just saying how fortunate I am not to have Rock Lizards or Brass Demons this time.

I see your point there. I still think you'll be destroyed. The forces of Super Happy Fun Circus are not to be taken lightly.

I bet you can win this, but you'll probably take heavy losses. You may lop off a limb with every strike, but if the demon hits a dwarf first, he may not get the chance to fight back. If you're fighting the clowns head-on solely for the challenge, good luck to you, but if your plan is to colonize the circus tent or to mine out the rest of the adamantine, you're better off with a spike traps on repeat and artifact furniture bait.

Do some spike traps on repeat to weaken the first wave, which will be significantly reduced since they're mostly made of non-solid inorganic materials. Agile dwarves should be able to kill the rest so long as they're not horribly outnumbered... A cave-in trap would help as a fallback if when the military is slaughtered by an ambush of neurotoxin/fire breathing steel cockroaches or whatever deadly beasts you've failed to account for.

If you go under your military screen and look at leather armour, underneath the type of leather (all the creatures it came from), it'll list all the demons on your map with skin. Helpful thought.

I'm going to set up a long hallway of spike traps with a balistae battery at the end and then line the hallway with fortifications and makrsdwarves behind them.
At the end of the hallway will be my military, in case they get through. Once I beat the main "wave" of them sitting around the top of the adamantine vein, I should be able to deal with any that remain. Just to be sure, though, It'll be a VERY long hallway lined with Adamantine and Steel spikes and Bronze Spiked Balls (the density, firmness, and decent sharpness of bronze make it best for this weapon, in my opinion.).

Bronze Spiked Balls

Those won't do anything unless you can somehow put them into an upright spear trap. The &s wont trigger a normal trap or preassure plate, so upright spears set to infinitely repeat are on of the only "trapping" ways to kill them. The others being cavein traps and obidian farm traps.

Christ, are you dwarves or are you elves? If you think Hell has too many demons, then youkill them till the population reaches an acceptable number.
Dwarf Fortress: So horrifying the players would rather talk about nice things, like Warhammer 40k.

I actually give my Dwarves Nether-Cap shields if I think I'll be fighting something with fire, ever since a Bismuth Bronze shield melted to the hand of one of my dwarves in a FB fight and he lost the whole arm due to infection.

I've just realized that I can't see or hear the word neurotoxin without hearing GLaDOS's voice.
