I need to get rid of a bunch of my animals. There are jsut simply too many of them. All I really need are the chickens and the pigs, but I have tons of yaks, water buffalo, etc., and I can't butcher them fast enough.

So, do I make an execution tower to drop them off of, or do I throw them down a pit?

Or, perhaps I could throw the animals into the caverns and let them get owned by cavern critters?

If you drop them, make sure it's at least 10z-levels. I'd make it 15 or 20. I've had animals survive repeated 6-8 level drops.

You should make a tower over your entrance. Then it can be painted with blood - a lot easier than color-coded stone or something.

My only problem is that I don't want some big eyesore out in the middle of my map.

I'm not entirely sure what to do here. if I make a pit inside my fort, it will produce miasma. If I make a tower outside, it will look horrible and my OCD will go insane.

I don't know what to do DX

The miasma won't be noticeable if the pit's deep enough. Especially if it goes into the caverns.

If you just want to get rid of them and you have magma you can trow them into that as well (if you do this for fps gain this is a better idea since it avoids to much blood in your fortress ). no matter what you choose simply go to the level you want to drop the from select zone select pasture and select the tiles you want to drop them from. This will order your dwarfs to drop them.

I jsut got an idea!

What if I used my excess animals as target practice for my marksdwarves?

EDIT:

Thijser, I don't have magma yet :( I'm a newb still. I only recently breached the first cavern layer, and that was because I was desperate for a water source during the winters, just in case I ran out of booze, or someone got injured.

Pit them into an atom smasher.

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.

Pit them into an atom smasher.

That's a good idea, but I would like to know if these animals would make goods target practice for my marksdwarves

The dwarves won't shoot at tame animals.

You could try. I don't think you can target friendly creatures. I could be wrong about that, though.

i'd go with tower. aesthetically, you could just make the tower look good, or in a dramatic location.  think of it as a mini-megaproject.

The pit is faster to set up, but the tower can be made to look nice with time.

Can't you just pasture them all in a danger room?

It has just occured to me that this is a very easy method of getting rid of cats (aka: pitting them somewhere deadly...)

Edit no doesnt work :/
