Change of opinion (cognitive dissonance)
« on: August 05, 2011, 10:42:35 am »

What I would really find good is the ability to have changing paranoia traits, and if dwarves are rewarded for a job they hate they will start liking it, or at least try to make their opinion less dissonant to their actions. For instance, if a dwarf started eating rats which he hates eating, after a long period of time he will start liking to eat it. And if he can't get his hands on something he wants, he'll start changing his opinion towards it.
"Oh I don't want that."

This is just one of the many examples of cognitive dissonance, and even if a feature of this is put in there are many other things related to opinion to put in which I'll like to see to give it more detail.

How many rats would you need to eat before you start liking them?

This is a great idea. For one reason, and one reason only:

"Greatly enjoys being locked in a small room while standing on upright spear traps."

>_>

<_<

"Greatly enjoys triggering the upright spear traps his friends are standing on."

..?!

I definitely think that with people only liking certain things, and really obscure things too, they should probably start liking things which are available after a while. If you get me.

I think it's the way towns develop now. In the beginning, people move into a town. Then they start producing tables, which results in more and more tables. Soon tables represent a significant portion of the population, they start lobbying for new laws and regulations, putting people to greater and greater disadvantage...

Strictly speaking, dwarves should be able to have more variable preferences (not just "has a preference for this" or "has no preference for this"), for a larger number of items.

More importantly, their likes/dislikes should be driven by what's available where they were raised. If you've never seen a gorilla or gorilla meat in your life, why would you have a preference for it?

Because you want to see it or saw it on the way there? We should keep those odd preferences around, although I think a mayor should stop mandating slade items because he somehow heard a story of them. (Hope slade isn't a spoiler, sorry if yes)
Although, I do think dwarves could start to like having... things they see every day around. Like, they ate deer for months, then the game died out and they had to start eating berries like elves. They'd be quite unhappy, I imagine.

This is the kind of thing I expect to see when dwarves aren't simply born with a whole personality and have theirs develop over their life.

More importantly, their likes/dislikes should be driven by what's available where they were raised. If you've never seen a gorilla or gorilla meat in your life, why would you have a preference for it?
Maybe their Dad loved gorilla meat and has told his children how great it is but they don't live near any jungles. They might even be disappointed when they finally try some, though, really I agree with you. The likes and dislikes are far too specific without cause but I'd still like to see some dwarves with odd preferences even if they can be explained through something like my example.

Well, we have to distinguish between a curiosity and a preference. If people tell me since birth that gorilla meat is really amazing, then I'll probably want to get my hands on some, but I won't necessarily like it any more.

More generalized preferences would be nice. For instance, some dwarves might just like "meat" (or "sweetbreads", "prepared intestines", etc.), or more generally "animal products", or "milk", or "dairy", or "eggs", or "vegetables" (although vegetables are hard to break down further since there's not much distinguishing them). I mean, odds are most people who like milk don't have such a specific preference that they're ambivalent toward all kinds except camel's milk.

A preference for the exotic might be interesting in itself or perhaps a preference for expensive meat?
