...The best use for aluminium is in alloys - mixing it with steel produces a pretty light (but still pretty damn strong) metal....

HERESY!

Actually, I've designed using 6061-T6 aluminum, which is is 0.7% iron by weight, but also contains up to 3.5% by weight other metals, and is over 95% aluminum.

It is impossible to weld aluminum to steel, if you want a weld that you can't break with your bare hands.

Uh-huh. Aluminium is peculiar. (And by mixing, I meant melting it down and stirring it with other liquids)

But I did forget to make that point, so thanks for qaulifying; it can be mostly aluminium, yes - but you need somethnig else in there. It's awesome how alloys work.

There's an alloy of steel called Chromoly steel (I think it's the 4XXX series, but don't quote me since it's been a while since I've done that particular metallurgy) that contains approximately 1% by weight molybdenum.

It doesn't do a whole lot - except increase the melting point of the metal by about a thousand degrees celsius (1800 Fahrenheit).

I love metallurgy.

Maybe I should mod in a reaction that allows me to smelt aluminum with another metal to make something more useful? Though aluminum is super-rare as it is, since we can't refine it from Bauxite in-game.

You need ridiculous amounts of electricity to smelt aluminum. You can refine a powerful abrasive, aluminum oxide, from Bauxite using a strong base (lye would work). Metal polish and sandpaper could be nifty "decorations" to apply to crafted items.

Which is unfortunate.

I suppose, if you were up to modding like crazy, construction of a separate smelter that required a connection to a power source... However, I really am not too clued up on how the modding works for this game, since it's radically different to the ones I normally make mods for (That being the eternally-moddable Bethesda games).

There are other techniques to retrieve aluminium from bauxite, however they produce a very low yield because of how strongly aluminium ions grip onto oxygen. I swear, it's a bloody nuisance if you want to work with it.

Hmmm I could see about doing that.. but not right now.  Might be an interesting addition to a mod i'm making..

So it would take Bauxite stone into the powered-furnace-like-workshop to produce aluminum, then use the same workshop to smelt aluminum + other metal into an aluminum alloy, which can be forged as usual into armor.  Aye?

Just think of the possibilities. To keep it reasonably scientifically accurate (like the rest of Toady's metallurgy/geology programming, as opposed to how bridges work) a fair bit of research would need to be done...

Or you could just make an aluminium/candy alloy for shits and giggles. Not that it'd do anything useful.

Well, I got a few things on my plate right now, such as a succession fort I gotta play/write up, and another mod I'm working on, the Beastial Dwarf Mod.. but once I get done with the first one, then I can free myself some time to look into this.

You could easily make a custom reaction that requires 1 Bauxite and 1 Lye, and doesn't use fuel, that produces 1 Alum. Ore.

But where's the fun in that?

Getting Alum. Ore
Or do you mean !!FUN!!? Because I actually don't see any of that here.

As much as my mod may have been forgotten, that doesn't change the fact that I have a bauxite -> aluminium reaction, involving 10 bauxite and 1 cryolite to a 90% chance of some aluminium. I forget how much.

I only like aluminium because I think it's funny to have aluminium cabinets, desks and chairs in brick builds with clear glass windows.
