Question about Gauntlets/Boots

I'm sure this has been addressed somewhere else, but I can't seem to find it.

Anyway, this is my problem:

I'm at the embark screen, and I'm trying to buy equipment for my single military dwarf.  How many "gauntlets" do I need to buy?  Do they come in pairs?  Or do I need to buy 2 "gauntlets" per dwarf?

Also, on the Military Screen, under equipment/uniforms, do I need to list "gauntlet" twice for a dwarf to make him equip both a left and right gauntlet, or will listing it once cause him to equip a pair?

In the embark screen, they're bought individually.

In the military screen, they're assigned in pairs.

Smithing them produces pairs.

Also, caravans bring them in pairs, but sell them individually.
