Pirates! Gold!

So, Sid Mier's Pirates! was an awesome game. But the 2004 sequal was...lackluster, at best.

Anyone know of any remake projects/open source verions/ripoffs at a playable state? It would be nice to see a more fleshed out version, or...gasp...a version where you can play a female pirate.

Ar!

I have absolutely no idea what its like, but this came out recently and it looked interesting enough for me to put on my wishlist.  Its not a remake or anything but it DOES have pirates in it.

Nope, but if you like pirates! you should like this game:

I recommend the mod mentioned in the wiki as well. I put way too many hours in this game while I was in college.

How did the orginal Pirates! differ from the remake? I played the first very briefly since it came with my 2004 editon. Apart from the remake being kinda childish and cartoony the orginal seemed the same

I saw that game in the store as well, Levi. I have no idea if it's any good either.
It doesn't seem to be very realistic (pirates with rocket luanchers??). I wouldn't have mind if it had very "light" fantasy like seeing a kraken or two as a very rare chance.
It seems to also be more of a RPG then the Pirates! game. Looks like theres levels, experience, mana and the whole works!

I've never played Pirates!, but Age of Pirates 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iST2IQmouVw&feature=related) is about pirates, and from what I've seen (I've never played this either) it looks like a pretty large/interesting game.

Sounds alright, not great though. It wouldn't really scratch my pirate itch.

I remember playing a mmorpg called Botany Bay or something along those lines.
It had really great sea combat. It was flawed from the start though with terrible translations and some really bizzare design choices like glowing weapons and dinosaurs.

Thanks for the link, I played that Pirates of the Caribbean game alot, and it had the makings of the best pirate game ever, it was just obviously unfinished.  It was like playing the beta of the best pirate game ever.  I didn't realize there was a modding community since I played the xbox version myself, so I would check it out, a little extra love was all that game needed..

Pirates! Gold was pretty terrible, especially compared to Sid Meier's Original. Different strokes, I guess.

Okay, so, today this girl I know-Lauren, just took a sudden dis-interest in talking to me. Is she just on her period or something?

Try finding cutthroats; terror on the high seas.
Quite aged, and you might experience compatibly problems. But it is the best pirate game i've found.

I'd add one to Age of Pirates 2.

And add that it's made by the same company as Pirates of the Caribbean above, and is pretty much a sequel to it.

It's not quite finished, and in all respects is in alpha, but it's free and you can give it a go and give some feedback to the dev if you want.
