Underground crops and seasons?
« on: August 03, 2011, 12:24:46 pm »

So I went spelunking with the search function, but couldn't find anything on the reason for the seasons for underground crops.  What was the rationale behind it?  Not that I really mind, I'm just curious.  I like the idea of crop rotation and would do it even if all underground crops could be grown in all seasons.

It's dwarf fortress.
You can't explain anything.

IT was referencing this: “Tide goes in, tide goes out. Never a miscommunication. You can’t explain that,”

Some of the crops are overpowered, so Armok locks up all of the seeds for part of the year. He would never deprive dwarves of their precious mushrooms, though.

It's especially egregious, since all above-ground crops can be grown year-round.

Personally I mod it so that underground crops are year-round and overland crops have limited seasons. Beyond the "It's Armok! We don't have to explain anything." idea Lectorog offered, there doesn't seem to be any good reason for the limited growing seasons with underground crops, so it's probably just a minor oversight that's never been important enough to fix.

I still rotate my underground crops anyway though, just for variety. Can't really picture my dwarves as such wine concourses that it's all they drink. Gotta at least get some good old fashion beer in there.

I've imagined that underground plants are intended to grow quite slowly because they don't get much light, explaining why they give less harvests each year compared to overworld plants. Why they're limited to specific seasons, well, I guess that's something that'll be fixed in the future.
