I don't think only allowing box launchers would nerf missiles as much as you might think. A box launcher is .15x as large as a normal launcher, and a missile is .05x hull space in a magazine (even more, if the magazine tech isn't very good). So for the space of say, 10 launchers and magazines for 9 reloads for each launcher at, say 80% magazine efficiency (giving 10x10 missile salvos), you get 104 one shot box launchers :P. Box Launchers are awesome.

What it would do would be to massively limit point defense, thereby possibly making missile more powerful.

Aggh...  Let me think.... Perhaps sometype of limit of amount of missile launcher's per 1000 tons a ship has? I am not sure, if anyone else has any suggestions feel free to say them, or any other special rules that you think would make the game more fun.

Perhaps nerfing larger missiles would be better. Some sort of penalty depending on size? It'd make small anti-missiles more effective compared to other missiles.

If you want to nerf missiles, I'd do it directly. Something like having to spend .5 msp on geosurvey sensors, making missiles less effective and more expensive and encouraging large missiles, which are more vulnerable to PD. Or maybe matching the weight spent on warheads with geosurvey sensor, effectively halving the damage.

A limit on launchers per 1000 tons could also work, and isn't unprecedented (David Weber's Honorverse had some explanation about the impeller fields used to launch the missiles interfering with each other if they were too close), but would complicate ship design.

Edit: Small missiles are already way more effective than larger missiles, since they have the same range and performance but are harder to shoot down; the only advantage of larger missiles is armor penetration, and with missiles you tend to fire large salvos rather than hoping for a lucky penetration anyways.

I personally think the weight malus (spent in geo survey) is a very good idea, as it would only be a minor change on the design of the missile itself, and not on every ship which as missiles.

Also, as a side note, for The Syndicate:
I personally think of it as having nearly no big building (except headquarters), but rather many "little" ones.
That would not let The syndicate have BIG shipyard, but littler ones, spread over earth.
The PDC side would also be a problem for a not that much militarised part of the population,
and The syndicate shouldn't have any (or maybe limited in size).

Ahah! I wasn't even aware of what Aurora was in the first place. Thank you very much for the link, Azkul, and thanks for pointing me to the other thread Boksi! I really appreciate it, and it gives me the chance to read all the tutorial threads and such.

However, it seems like everyone else in the thread not only knows what they're talking about but are smart enough to debate the balance issues in the game as well. If this is something with a limited number of people participating I feel like I'm really not qualified to be one of them. I'm really surprised there are multiple people so familiar with the game; I guess since Aurora has a lot of mechanics like Dwarf Fortress there's a lot of crossover in interest.

I'm going to hang around to learn and I'll be here if you need another person RebelZhouYuWu, but otherwise I don't want to interfere with the people who clearly know what they're doing more than I do. XD

I'm relatively new to Aurora as well, but I'd love to take a stab at playing Japan The Nordic Imperium, an agglomeration of the Scandinavian and Germanic nations, if the Euro Union guy doesn't mind losing a few countries.

If not, I'll give the custom name & info of another nation centered in Brazil. (I'm Dutch/German-American and Brazilian)

This looks like it's going to be awesome. South America, under the leadership of Brazil is going to attempt to spread to the galaxy. I just need to manage to make this pass in house of deputies and senate, put the projects for bidding and there I go.
Of course, to pass at the legislative, some wealth is going to have to be spread. And let's not speak anything about of the overpricing and corruption in the bidding process...

Overpricing? Corruption? Sounds just like South America. :P

Alright, I'll do the 'Imperia Latina' then. Imperia Latina, Empire of Brazil, or Brazilian Empire(this sounds cliche for some reason. Maybe its because its the actual name of historical Brazil in colonical times :P)

Yay Ehndras! Glad to know I'm not the only new person. Plus I've got to say, Dutch/German-American and Brazilian? That's pretty awesome. 8)

If RebelZhouYuWu and the other people who really seem to know a lot are okay with new players participating, I'll request the "Japan Alliance" faction to be renamed "The Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere" for flavor.I'm really interested to see how you handle this RebelZhouYuWu, since you seem to want to include a lot of story elements. I'm reading everything I possibly can about the mechanics and everything but I'm more curious as to how you intend to incorporate a story throughout all of this.

Speaking of the story I saw through the link Azkul generously provided (thanks again Azkul!) I saw that Steve's take on this have a very skeletal backstory for the various factions already. If you don't mind me asking are you building off of this skeleton? Do you want us to provide a backstory for a starting point or did you generally already have something in mind?

In any case, I'm excited because it seems like there are a lot of possibilities here. I'm looking forward to seeing how all of this turns out! ^^

Edit: Oh hah, misunderstood the purpose of Ehndras strikethrough before. XD Disregard me.

Baque:

Err, I already called the Japanese change, hence the point of the Brazil Empire post. :) Japan's the only nation left, I believe the other one was taken a few posts ago.

I'm not sure if there's a limit to the number of players/nations, maybe RebelZhouYuWu could offer some clarification?

Ok, I think we should stop this at eight nations, two of which are NPC nations controlled by me.  The final nation view will look like this:

United States - Me
China - Me
European Union - Sirus
The Syndicate - tompliss
Republic of India - Boksi
USSR - Azkul
Islamic Alliance - Sheb
Union of South American Nations - Felius

For those of you who do not have a nation, feel free to talk to one of the leaders to get like another thread started for the nation to discuss what to do with the nation.  Sorry I have been busy recently so I been having trouble getting this fully finish but hopefully I should get the rest of the nation's information up today along with some game rules and by tomorrow I should begin typing up reports for the nations.  If you are one of the leaders I posted up above, post below showing that you are at least following along before this game begins.

Edit: There was eight nations, I forgot about Felius...

It's good to know this is still ongoing. I don't mind the slow pace, either, although going faster would be nice :P
