Let's Play: Oregon Trail (Willamette Valley)
« on: August 02, 2011, 10:40:02 pm »

That's right. We're going to Oregon country!

In case you aren't familiar, Oregon Trail is a simulation of traveling in a covered wagon with your family to Oregon. The journey can be quite perilous. At the end, you're scored on how quickly you made it to Oregon, how wealthy and healthy (and how many survivors) you were when you got there, and with a bonus for how poor you started out.

We'll need to form a party. I will be our illustrious leader, Jebediah Kerman!

The other four in the party will be YOU! Choose names, the four best get to be 'your' characters. Character or no, anyone who wants can have a say in the decisions the party will make.

We also need to choose an occupation- it'll be up to you how hardcore you wish to be (brotip: losing is fun).

Then, what we buy to start off. This will depend on our starting money, so keep that in mind!

We also have to choose when to set out.

Once that's all done, we're on the trail! We set off in Missouri.

So, we need to decide who's in our party, our job, what we bring and when we start off. I'll start us off a little ways on filling rations and steady pace if nobody says otherwise. Start deciding, everybody!

Aha! I always wanted to see what this game is like! Can we have a character named "Conrad Mulvihille"? (Not my name, just sounds like a good Irish name. Maybe that or Conrad Mahoney)

How hardcore are you willing to get with this? It'd be champ if we had mostly teachers ; )

Professor Jiro, reporting.

I once did a stupid run with a wagon full of teachers, grandfather clocks, one rifle, and 10 bullets. Only one person made it through, but we made glorious time on the way there. And then we made our clock delivery.

Couple things to clear:

Character names are limited to 10 letters (Conrad Mul y'are, if you don't choose something else). Also, we only choose the profession of our ONE lead character, the others contribute no money (presumably being either houseworking family members or unemployed deadbeats).

Anyway, so far it looks like we have a "Prof. Jiro" and "Conrad".

Well, in that case, I choose "Unemployed Deadbeat"!

"Conrad" or "Conrad Mul" will do nicely!

I've got to say Matt must be doing quite nicely if he can sell you 2000 lbs of food and 20 oxen. That's one hell of a stock.

Actually, I'll represent the forum and be "Urist" if that's alright and nothing has been fixed yet. Seems fitting ; )

Do remember to be planning the actual details of the voyage- jobs, goods and start time.

Well, I suppose I vote blacksmith, 2 sets of each wagon part, 10 sets of clothing (2 for each person, or are they even important?) and we leave in June. I've never played the game so I'm pretty much just guestimating because you asked ; )

I figure if we buy five boxes of bullets (will we really need to shoot 100 bullets?) and spend the rest on oxen and food, this would seem logically fine (though I really have no clue).

Where can you get this game?

Also, if there's enough room, can I have one person, named Jackie Boy?

Bullets = Food. Clothes are probably a good idea, one or two of each wagon part is good... pretty much just a small amount of food, plentiful ammunition, and several oxen are all we need, though. And all we can afford, if I get my way- I say we go teacher.

Game's ancient, so you might have to dig around a bit to find it. I know there's slightly less ancient sequels/remakes, but those might be even harder to find due to obscurity.

Finally, my lack of ability to come up with a suitable name is killing me here. Still, better than nothing:

Duke. He's here to kick ass and chew bubble gum, and he's not entirely certain how historically appropriate gum is right now. Anyway, point is most problems can be solved by shooting stuff.

Man, what's with all the fancypants graphics? And there's character classes now?? What is the world coming to....can we still at least slaughter ten times more buffalo than we'll ever possibly eat when we hunt?

Also, I want to be the first person that dies of dysentery. I'll consider it a success if that's at least in Colorado or further west.

Oh, and THIS is the Oregon Trail I grew up playing:

XD Just like Red-King, I grew up with the old, old original Oregon Trail. But fortunately I've seen this version once or twice too. You rock for the shout out to the original, Redking!

If you're still taking names, I'll throw Ezekiel into the ring because I like the old-timey Biblical sound of it which I think fits very well with the overall theme of the game.

Sensei, how did you want to go about this Let's Play? I'd suggest Teacher as a job because I think the increased difficulty would make it more enjoyable. However I want you to have fun playing it too! Teacher would be great if you feel up for it, otherwise Conrad mentioned Blacksmith which is a nice middle path (I've found Doctor to be even easier than Banker because of the bonus effect).

As for the start date I think April is the best option. Of course if you wanted to make this impossibly hard you could always start in August.  :P

With $400 dollars to spend, here's what I'd recommend:

8 Oxen-$160: If I recall correctly the amount of oxen you have controls how fast the wagon moves. More oxen in the beginning will help out the most in the long run, especially if any of them wander off or get sick or die. Oxen are also worth the most points besides people at end game.
10 Pairs of Clothes-$100: - Clothes can catch fire or get wet and anyone going naked is almost guaranteed to get sick. Plus Clothes are good trade items for Injuns or whatever else we need later in the game. Clothes and Wagon Parts are both worth more at end game.
3 Wagon Parts-$30 - 1 of each type. If we needed more of them for any reason we'd hopefully be able to trade for them latter on. Again Wagon Parts are worth more score at end game.
30 Boxes Bullets-$60 - With low cash bullets are going to be our main source of food. You can only carry back 250 lbs. from hunting, so try to only shoot big animals and 1 Caribou or Buffalo will give you more than you can carry.
150 lbs. Food-$30 - This really relies on you hunting for food no matter what so bad hunting can kill us. But we can't really afford to blow a lot of money on food with a Teacher's salary. You just have to be a good huntsman-surely learning to use a gun will help keep the schoolkids in line out in Oregon.

This leaves us with $20 spare cash. We'll need at least $5 for a ferry (I remember one river where you better damn well take the ferry) and maybe for more. It can also come in handy for trading if we need anything latter. However I don't think it will pay the toll at the end of the game, so we're definitely rafting down the river.

For food it should always, always be set at Filling. The only reason we should ever change it is to avoid starvation if for some reason hunting doesn't go well or something. However, we should use a Strenuous Pace, not a Steady one. Going at a constant steady pace will make us hit winter no matter what, and Grueling is the Pace you want to avoid. Strenuous should be the default, and we should only slow down because of disease or such.

How does that sound to you, Sensei?

Edit: Sensei if you do go with this it really, really depends a lot on Hunting. Also the first week of April or so can still be cold, so spending the first week or so hunting might not be a bad idea.
