The Way of the Warrior- Combat Styles
« on: August 02, 2011, 02:05:16 pm »

Okay, well I was playing DF in adventure mode, and I realized that there were really only two ways to ordinary combat, hacking and slashing, or bashing people around with your fists and mouth, I think it would be an interesting idea if during world generation a figure would learn from animal X, the martial arts style of Y, then went off to found Z dojo to teach warriors the art of Y. So that way when you start your adventure you can talk to the denizens of your starting town about the surrounding area and they would tell you about Z and its history. When you made your way to Z you could talk to the headmaster of the dojo and ask him for training, he will give you a list of procedurally generated tests which you must complete before gaining training. When all of the tests (or tasks) are completed, you can talk to him again and then, depending on how complicated the training is it will simulate history for as many weeks, months, or years as it takes before you are ready to practice your next skill that you learn, and after you go through that practice it simulates again until the next, etc..

Some skills you may learn would be passive counters, special strikes, and exotic (procedurally generated) weapon (or tool) skills. Also, it would be nice to have every action in a strike you learned to preform detailed in the combat narrative text.

Once your basic training is completed you become a member of the martial society and they will have tasks for you to do in reward for a higher position in their society and more skills.

Let me know how you think this sounds!

I think the ideas cool, and it would be an interesting thing in Dwarf fortress mode where maybe a dwarf hits a high enough skill that they unlock special skills and can teach them to your other dwarves during demonstrations. Anyways I agree with this idea, since it would be cool to execute some more complicated kick or something during a brawl.

I play adventure mode because it's hard and when I play, I am too.
I believe we're talking about full scale colonisation here.  You don't just leave all your shit in the van when you move house.

Planned but without the animal kung fu stuff.

Good thing to, do you really want to know 'The Bunny Kick'?

Quote from: Dev Notes
Combat styles

 *  Combat styles involving weapons or natural attacks with associated stances and moves
 *  Ability to learn moves, etc. from others with whom you have a high enough reputation
 *  Certain moves may only be available as specific counters, while others might just be regular attacks
 *  Ability to create new moves/styles when highly skilled

Oh, sorry, I have read through a good portion of the Dev Notes, but I must have missed that.

The bunny kick would be awesome, it's not like it wouldn't suit DF.

Iv seen people who haven't had a redheaded person in their family for quite a while, and then out of nowhere two out of three of their children have red hair.
What color was the mailman's hair?

Yeah, bunnies are vicious, didn't you know? I'd love to use a lethal bunny kick to the heads of my enemies.

Well, mostly an example of how vicious bunnies actually are. You are quite correct.
