So this is basically a voxel-based engine kind of thing? I remember from some Subversion dev logs where Chris was playing with a physics set up that seemed remarkably similar to this. I kept thinking voxel as I compared what I was seeing to MC. This thing is, in my layman's understanding, just cramming in a ton more points of reference than games like MC are. And then making realistic looking objects and putting nice shiny textures on them.

Voxel engines are basically physics engines.

But that is not what this really is.

This thing is, in my layman's understanding, just cramming in a ton more points of reference than games like MC are.

I also think it is something like that, with the important part here being the program that tells the computer how to show them.

Sooo, apparently it only shows things that are directly in front of you and everything else is compressed and not in use. Sounds cool, altough I still wonder how they'll do animations.

Heh. This made me have some sort of impossible epiphany. It's 10 years from now. I'm in my personal simulation room, or holo-lab, or whatever the heck you want to call it. I'm strapped with sensors and vibrators around my body (or maybe not). I'm on a beach - or, a computer simulation of one. I walk of to a palm tree, and feel it's bark. It feels a little realistic, sort of. Then I look out into the sunset. The water's moving, the sand's sort of blowing around on the ground. Off in the distance is an island. I can't walk to it, I have to swim. So I jump in the water and move my hands around 'till I get there. On the island is a lone treasure chest. I fumble around a moment with a key until I get it unlocked. And in it, I find and pick up a bunch of print outs of photos from the computer that's running the simulation in the first place!

That really would be amazing. I don't know how possible it'll be. Maybe much more than I can imagine, maybe not at all.

It's more likely we get "brain override", where it'll actually suspend your body and directly input your brain sensory. So you'd hook up your brain, making for the best possible immersion and graphics.

In fact, there was quite some development recently on this.

Besides, who would want to be strapped with heavy machinery in a hologram room? Just doesn't seem plausible to me.

Not me. But I think 10 years down the road, we'll probably have technology that can't be comprehended by us right now. A singularity, if you will.

The australian guy didn't make a voxel engine. He made a voxel rendering engine. But there are others, that even include CUDA for speed.

The downside of voxels is that they tend to occupy a lot of space.

I don't know whether that pun was intentional or not, but I'm sigging it anyways.

Interesting. Maybe everyone having the same form of graphics instead of racing for polygons will let them actually make the games fun.

Doubt it. They'll just obsess over better volumetric effects, better lens flare, better depth of field, or some other niche aspect of graphics.

Voxels eat memory like it was chex mix is what I believe he's going for.

He does explain it a bit better in the first video. Obviously he cant go into detail(trade secrets), but I sort of understand what they are doing, even if I dont have the slightest idea how it is being done.

It's like Plato's Cave.
