I modded Dwarves to be able to use Blowguns. Their ultra-small contact point but low penetration and the speed at which they fire makes them shred unarmoured creatures: they cause A LOT of pain, but they don't have the weight or penetration to beat a Crossbow.

UPDATE: Arena testing shows otherwise. Hmmmmmm
