About houses...
« on: July 31, 2011, 03:20:23 am »

Well,i noticed something weird.
Lets say that in world generation,a wooden house is built.(like,on year 10)
But if we stop the history generation, for example,on year 2012,and we go look at the house,IT IS STILL THERE.
shouldnt it decompose,burn,or be destroyed?
not only in wars and accidents, but also to make room for better houses?

I'm sure something like this is planned.

would be cool if the same algorithm is used on your abandoned fortresses and we get away from the "spread all items around" system

Battle damage and the like certainly are planned (and used to be in for megabeast rampages in the old town system), and have been mentioned in a DF Talk episode. From the dev log, ruined towns will have decaying buildings as well, but I don't recall a mention of building decay for buildings in otherwise living settlements.

Presumably there would be maintenance and repairs taking place while the place was still inhabited. Wooden walls etc needing replacement planks every once in a while in Fortress Mode would be nice, though. Anyone know if painting wood to protect it from the elements was known in-period?

Never used Dwarf Therapist, mods or tilesets in all the years I've been playing.
I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

Hopefully with the no-so-far-off manor release, Toady will think of haunted mansions and add decaying on a per building basis. Then you just have to run the decaying algorithm from the last time someone lived in there.

buildings decay in diffent ways.
i.e. a stome building will have the roof fall in, and strom tip over the walls,
if no one loots the stones , the stone will last for ever in a heap on the ground.

Agree, plus that's about the LAST thing *I* want to see from this kind of game - author spending valuable development time on useless graphics.
