More like the 18th sense, amirite? It's still really cool, though. I love the TED talks.

I understand the appeal and usefulness of this kind of technology.
I could see myself using that kind of technology if I had like a button-y handheld devise to manipulate it with.
I just cannot stand touch screens, and "pinching" my files is going to make me want to punch something,
I if I could interface by punching, it may be another story.

I would pay the $350 for these if they were being manufactured, but alas, it seems they are holding off for whatever reason. This would be for sure the coolest thing ever to have.

Seems to be a recurring theme at TED talks. Show some impressive tech stuff, nothing happens for a decade. Say some pretentious stuff, get commended by the crowd. Babble some artsy stuff, win awards.

I got little respect for the TED conferences. There is the occasional real scientist talking about their work with chimps in the wild or something, but they are not terribly popular or interesting.

He has apparently made the technology open source, though.

This is quite an old news. The field of AR (Augmented Reality) is very close linked to the rise of smart phone right now. Many new developments regarding Ambient Intelligence had be done more than prototypes. The problem right now is not how to do it, but how to do it economically and commercially possible. (It used to be called LBS - Location Based Service, but many different terms described the same things.)

That's not really the point of TED talks. It isn't a sales pitch where they say "Look at this cool thing we built; and be sure to meet up with us outside the auditorium. We will be selling them for $19.99 + S&H after the talk." It's more of a "Look what is possible using today's technology." They're meant more as inspirational or motivational talks than a commercial sales pitch.

Maybe it's parasitic. It never loses its flavor because you eventually die from having your nutrients stolen by it.

I don't feel like watching a video. Which sixth sense is it this time?

Personally, I like the device that gives you a sense of absolute direction, shame they are so expensive.

You mean a compass?

Most today smartphones already have compass (magnetometer) build-in. And it's an important part of integrated sensors signals feedback in AR. (Detecting user's facing direction)

A compass doesn't have much of a direct interface, so you can't really call it a sense. No, the device I'm talking about basically tied a compass effect directly into your sensory network, giving you an intuitive sense of absolute direction. From what I understand from people who've used them, the brain very quickly learns to make some great use of this additional (and constant) stream of information. I also think they one that lets you see with your tongue was pretty cool, though that one is obviously for blind people.

I don't see how a smartphone with a compass built in could ever be called a sense, though, but I can watch the viddys now.
